History Tuition in Singapore

History tuition in Singapore is structured coaching for O-Level Humanities History (2261), Pure History (2174), A-Level H1 History (8821), H2 History (9752) and IB History. A tutor builds conceptual knowledge of the prescribed topics, then drills the two skills the papers reward most — source-based case study analysis and thesis-led, well-evidenced essays — under timed exam conditions and to the official Levels of Response band descriptors.

Sources, essays and the verdict

Turning content recall into argued essays

History tuition in Singapore follows the MOE syllabus for O-Level (Humanities Social Studies + History 2261, and Pure History 2174), A-Level H1 History (8821), H2 History (9752) and IB History. Tutors build conceptual understanding of the prescribed topics and the two skills the papers reward most: source-based case study (SBCS) inference, comparison, reliability and utility, and well-structured, argument-led essays with precise evidence.

Before you start

What history parents weigh up first

Source skills and essay skills are marked separately

The O-Level and A-Level History papers split marks between source-based case study and structured essays. In the O-Level Humanities (History) paper that is 35 marks for Section A sources and 15 for Section B essays; at H2 each paper splits 40 marks of sourcework and 60 of essays. They need different training, so we diagnose both.

Narrative answers cap the grade

The most common reason able students underperform in History is writing what happened rather than arguing a stand. Levels of Response mark schemes reward a clear thesis, balanced analysis and evaluation. Retelling events, however accurately, keeps an answer in the middle bands.

Build a case-study and evidence bank early

Top scripts deploy specific dates, figures and developments as evidence. Compiling a structured evidence bank per Issue or theme across the year — rather than cramming before prelims — is what lets students write precise, well-supported answers under time pressure.

Historiography matters more at H2

A-Level H2 History expects awareness of differing historical interpretations. Tutors introduce historiographical perspectives so essays show the evaluative depth H2 mark schemes reward, beyond the descriptive level acceptable at O-Level.

Who we coach

From Lower Secondary to A-Level — who we coach

We match the tutor and method to the exact paper and level

Parents of Secondary students

Children sitting O-Level Pure History or History within Combined Humanities, who lose marks on source questions or write narrative essays.

  • Source-based case study technique
  • Narrative instead of argument
  • Combined Humanities essay structure

Parents of JC students (H1 / H2 History)

Children coping with content volume but struggling with the analytical depth, evaluation and historiography expected at A-Level.

  • Thesis-led essay argument
  • Historiographical awareness
  • Source paper under time pressure

Parents of IB History students

Children following the IB Diploma and needing focused support on Papers 1-3 and the historical investigation internal assessment.

  • Paper 1 source evaluation (OPVL)
  • Paper 2/3 essay structure
  • Historical investigation (IA)

Students aiming for the top bands

Already passing comfortably but stuck below the highest bands because answers lack a sharp stand and precise evidence.

  • Reaching A1/distinction bands
  • Evidence precision
  • Evaluation and judgement

Exam craft

How a History answer actually earns marks

The source method and essay structure behind the bands.

01

Our source-based case study method, step by step

Section A of every History paper rewards a disciplined source method. We drill one repeatable routine so students stop guessing what each question wants.

PEEL-S for sourcework
  1. 1

    Read the provenance first

Before the content, note who produced the source, when, for whom and why. Origin and purpose drive every reliability and utility judgement.

  2. 2

Make the inference, then prove it

State what the source suggests, then quote the exact words or detail that support the inference. An unsupported inference earns nothing.

  3. 3

    Cross-reference for comparison and reliability

Set the source against another and against contextual knowledge — agree, disagree or extend — so the judgement is evidenced, not asserted.

  4. 4

Answer the assertion with a stand

For the 'how far do you agree' assertion question, group sources for and against, weigh them, and reach a supported judgement rather than listing each source in turn.

02

How the History papers are built across O-Level, A-Level and IB

Every History qualification splits its marks between source work and essays. Knowing the exact split is how we plan the term.

ComponentWhat it coversMarks / weightTime
O-Level Humanities (History), Section AOne source-based case study (around five sub-questions) testing inference, comparison, reliability and the assertion question.35 markswithin 1 h 45 min

Scoring & strategy

Turning a History script into a higher band

Where history tuition marks are won and lost.

01

What separates a top-band History essay from a middle-band one

Examiners use Levels of Response descriptors. This is roughly how the same content reads at two different levels.

CriterionMiddle bandTop band
Stand / thesisImplied or only stated in the conclusionClear, sustained argument set out and returned to throughout
Use of evidenceGeneral references, few precise dates or figuresSpecific, well-chosen evidence deployed to prove each point
BalanceOne-sided or lists factors without weighing themConsiders counter-arguments and weighs their relative importance
Evaluation / judgementDescription of what happened, little judgementReasoned judgement that prioritises factors and reaches a conclusion
02

Where History tuition students usually lose marks

Most dropped marks in History are predictable, fixable habits rather than gaps in knowledge.

Writing a narrative of events instead of arguing a stand.

Open with a thesis, then make every paragraph a point that defends or qualifies it — the Levels of Response scheme rewards argument over recall.

Making source inferences without quoting the source.

State the inference, then anchor it to the exact words, dates or details in the source so the point is evidenced.

Judging reliability only by source type ('it's a newspaper, so it's biased').

Use provenance — origin, purpose and audience — and cross-reference against other sources and contextual knowledge.

Listing every source in turn for the assertion question.

Group the sources for and against the assertion, weigh them, and reach a supported overall judgement.

Singapore context

History tuition and the Singapore exam pathway

01

How History fits the O-Level, A-Level and IB pathways here

History is a humanities subject whose grade feeds real progression decisions — the SG context that makes the band matter.

O-Level Humanities aggregate

Humanities (History) is graded A1-F9 and counts toward the L1R5 aggregate used for JC and polytechnic admission alongside English and the relevant content subjects.

A-Level H1 vs H2 choice

H1 History is one 3-hour paper; H2 is two papers with deeper content and historiography. We coach to whichever a student offers, with H2 rank points (A=20 down to E=10) contributing to the university application aggregate.

Combined vs Pure / Elective

Some students take History within Combined Humanities and others sit Pure History (2174); the source and essay technique transfers, but the breadth and paper differ, so we coach the exact paper sat.

IB Diploma History

For IB students, History is one of the six subjects scored toward the 45-point diploma, with the internal assessment completed during the course rather than in a final exam.

Why Eduprime

Coaching that argues, not just memorises dates

What separates a real History specialist from generic humanities tuition

Source-and-essay History specialists

Tutors who coach the O-Level Humanities, A-Level H1/H2 and IB History papers daily and mark to the Levels of Response scheme — not generalists working from a textbook.

Diagnostic before we teach

A free first-session diagnostic marks a recent script to pinpoint whether marks are lost to source method, weak argument or thin evidence, so coaching targets the real gap.

Band-strategy, not just content

We prioritise the skills that move a script between Levels of Response bands — thesis, balance and evaluation — rather than re-teaching content the student already knows.

Evidence bank, not last-minute cramming

Students build a structured case-study and evidence bank per Issue or theme across the year, so precise dates and developments are ready under exam timing.

Fair pay keeps good tutors

Tutors are paid fairly and on time, so the strong ones stay with your child through to the O-Level, A-Level or IB exam instead of churning.

What families say

Parents on the essay and SBQ marks that lifted

Representative experiences from families we've worked with

My son knew the content cold but kept writing narrative essays and stalling in the B grades. The tutor retrained him to argue a stand and use precise evidence, and his essay marks climbed over two terms.

Mrs Tan W.

Parent of Sec 4 boy · Tampines · 1-to-1 home

The source-based questions were where she lost the most marks. The step-by-step method for inference and reliability made an immediate difference — her SBCS marks were noticeably steadier by the prelims.

Mr R. Kumar

Parent of Sec 4 girl · Bukit Batok · 1-to-1 online

My daughter is doing H2 History and was overwhelmed by the content for both papers. The tutor helped her build an evidence bank and brought in historiography, and her essays finally showed judgement.

Mdm Sarah A.

Parent of JC2 girl · Pasir Ris · 1-to-1 home

Honest about what was realistic — no big promises, just steady weekly source and essay practice with clear feedback marked to the bands. That's exactly what we wanted.

Mrs Goh L.

Parent of Sec 4 girl · Clementi · Small group

The free diagnostic alone was useful — it showed his sourcework was fine but his essays had no stand. We continued and the improvement in his structured-response answers was clear by mid-year.

Mr Lee K.

Parent of Sec 3 boy · Sengkang · 1-to-1 online

My son does IB History and the historical investigation was a mystery to us. The tutor walked him through source evaluation and the IA structure, and he felt far more in control by submission.

Student journeys

From content-heavy answers to argued essays

Representative paths from stuck to confident

Challenge

Strong content recall but writing narrative essays stuck in the middle bands for O-Level Humanities (History).

  1. Diagnostic traced the gap to argument, not knowledge
  2. Rebuilt thesis-led essay structure over six weeks
  3. Drilled structured-response questions to the Levels of Response scheme

Essay scripts moved from descriptive to argued and graded higher through the prelims; entered the O-Level with a clear method.

Sec 4 boy · ~2 terms

Challenge

Capable JC student overwhelmed by H2 content for both papers and unable to show judgement in essays.

  1. Built a structured evidence bank per theme
  2. Introduced historiographical perspectives for evaluation
  3. Timed source and essay practice to band descriptors

Essays began weighing factors and reaching reasoned judgements; source-paper timing steadied before the A-Level.

JC2 girl · ~3 terms

Challenge

IB History student unsure how to evaluate sources or scope the historical investigation.

  1. Drilled OPVL source evaluation for Paper 1
  2. Scoped a focused, researchable IA question
  3. Structured Paper 2/3 essays to the markbands

Source answers became consistently evidenced and the IA was submitted with a clear, well-supported argument.
