Before you start

What A-Level H2 Geography students raise with us early

Description does not score; evaluation does

H2 Geography marks reward a structured argument with applied evidence and explicit evaluation. Writing everything you remember about a topic, without evaluating, reliably bands low under the SEAB 9173 mark scheme.

Three distinct skills, examined differently

Structured questions, essays and the Geographical Investigation each test different abilities. Essay technique does not automatically transfer to data-response or fieldwork analysis, so each is coached as its own strand.

Build deployable case-study banks

Concise, current case studies applied precisely to the command word are what lift an essay from generic to evaluative. Compiling and drilling targeted evidence banks across the four clusters is one of the highest-leverage things a H2 Geography student can do.

JC1 is the time to build habits

Analytical and essay-structuring habits are far easier to build in JC1 than to rescue in a compressed JC2. Early foundation work pays off through the prelims and the A-Level.

Who we coach

The JC students H2 Geography coaching helps most

We match JC geography specialists to the student's stage and gap

JC1 students

Building the analytical and essay-structuring habits H2 Geography demands before the JC2 crunch.

  • Adjusting to evaluative writing
  • Physical and human cluster foundations
  • Early case-study habits

JC2 students

Facing the prelim-to-A-Level window with essay technique or data-response below target.

  • Essays banding low despite content
  • Data-response analysis
  • Prelim-to-A-Level gap

Strong-content, low-mark students

Know the geography but lose marks by describing rather than constructing an evaluated argument.

  • Description over evaluation
  • Weak essay structure
  • Vague case-study use

Geographical Investigation candidates

Needing dedicated support for fieldwork design, data analysis and the Cluster 4 question in Paper 2.

  • Research-question design
  • Method and data presentation
  • Fieldwork reasoning under marks

Exam craft

How A-Level H2 Geography is actually answered

The paper structure and the essay move that earns the marks.

01

How the H2 Geography (9173) papers are built

SEAB H2 Geography is two 3-hour papers, each weighted 50%. Paper 1 covers Clusters 1 and 2; Paper 2 covers Clusters 3 and 4, including the Geographical Investigation.

ComponentWhat it coversMarks / weightTime
Paper 1 β€” structured questionsTwo structured questions on Tropical Environments and Development, Economy and Environment (Clusters 1-2).30 marks eachPaper 1 = 3 h, 50%
Paper 1 β€” essaysTwo levels-marked essays drawing on Clusters 1 and 2, rewarding structured argument and evaluation.20 marks each(within the 3 h)
Paper 2 β€” Fieldwork questionSection A: a Geographical Investigation (Cluster 4) structured question on research design, methods and data analysis.40 marksPaper 2 = 3 h, 50%
Paper 2 β€” Sustainable FutureA structured question (30 marks) and an essay (20 marks) on Sustainable Future and Climate Change (Cluster 3).50 marks(within the 3 h)
02

Turning a remembered topic into an evaluative essay paragraph

The problem

Essay command: 'Assess the view that climate change is the greatest threat to tropical environments.' A strong-content student writes everything they know about deforestation, warming and storms β€” and bands low. How should one paragraph actually be built?

Worked solution

  1. 1Take a position the question demands: name climate change as one threat, then signal you will weigh it against others (deforestation, urbanisation) β€” this answers 'assess', not 'describe'.
  2. 2State the point: 'Climate change poses a severe, system-wide threat because it alters the baseline conditions all tropical processes depend on.'
  3. 3Apply specific evidence, not generic knowledge: cite a current, named case β€” e.g. coral bleaching on a documented reef system, or a measured shift in a tropical monsoon regime β€” with figures where you have them.
  4. 4Evaluate explicitly: judge scale, reversibility and timeframe versus a rival threat ('unlike localised deforestation, climate forcing is global and slow to reverse, so its threat is more pervasive but operates over a longer horizon').
  5. 5Link back to the command word: 'On balance, climate change is the more fundamental threat, though its impact is mediated by how exposed each tropical environment already is to direct human pressure.'

Answer: A paragraph that takes a position, applies a named case, and judges it against an alternative β€” scoring in the top band instead of the description band.

The decisive H2 Geography move is converting recall into judgement: every paragraph must apply a specific case and evaluate it against the command word. Knowledge alone bands low; applied, weighed knowledge bands high.

Scoring & strategy

Turning H2 Geography marks into rank points

Where the points are won, and how the grade feeds your UAS.

01

How A-Level H2 grades convert to rank points

Each H2 subject grade converts to rank points toward the University Admission Score (UAS). From the 2026 cohort the UAS is computed from three H2 subjects plus the best H1, to a maximum of 70 points; Project Work is now pass/fail and no longer scored.

  1. A

    20 rank points

The top H2 grade and the full rank-point contribution toward the UAS.

  2. B

    17.5 rank points

A strong distinction grade, half a band below the top.

  3. C

    15 rank points

Solid performance; often the realistic near-term target for a mid-band student.

  4. D

    12.5 rank points

A pass with room to lift; usually a structure or evaluation gap, not a knowledge gap.

  5. E

    10 rank points

The minimum H2 pass; foundational essay technique typically needs rebuilding here.

  6. S

    5 rank points

A sub-pass H2 result, scored at the H1 level only.

  7. U

    0 rank points

Ungraded; the priority is rebuilding core argument and evidence skills.

02

Where A-Level H2 Geography marks are usually lost

Most dropped marks are not gaps in knowledge β€” they are predictable, fixable habits under the 9173 mark scheme.

Describing the topic instead of answering the command word ('assess', 'to what extent', 'evaluate').

Open each essay by taking a position the command demands, and close each paragraph with an explicit judgement.

Using generic, undated or invented case studies that don't fit the question.

Drill a tight evidence bank of current, specific cases and match each to the command word before writing.

Restating figures in a data-response question without inferring or explaining the geographical pattern.

Move from 'what the data shows' to 'why, and what it implies' β€” the analysis is where the marks sit.

Treating the Fieldwork (Cluster 4) question as an essay and ignoring methodology, sampling and reliability.

Coach the Geographical Investigation as its own strand: research question, method choice, data presentation and limitations.

What separates a description answer from a top-band evaluation.

01

From recall to evaluation in H2 Geography answers

The 9173 mark scheme is levels-marked: the same content earns very different marks depending on how it is argued. This is the ladder we coach students up.

02

The H2 Geography study toolkit we build with students

Concrete artefacts a student leaves each term with β€” the things that actually move bands.

Command-word essay scaffolds

Reusable structures for 'assess', 'evaluate' and 'to what extent' essays so argument is automatic under time.

Cluster case-study bank

A tight, current set of named cases across all four clusters, matched to likely command words.

Data-response inference drills

A repeatable move from 'what the data shows' to 'why and what it implies' for the structured questions.

Geographical Investigation checklist

Research question, method, sampling, presentation and reliability β€” the Cluster 4 marks framework.

Timed-paper marking log

Past-paper scores marked to the 9173 standard, tracking band movement to the prelim and A-Level.

Singapore context

A-Level H2 Geography and university admission

01

How an H2 Geography grade shapes your local-university options

H2 Geography is one of three H2 subjects whose grades drive the University Admission Score β€” the SG context that makes the grade matter.

UAS max 70 (2026)

From the 2026 cohort the University Admission Score is computed from three H2 subjects plus the best H1, capped at 70 points. A stronger H2 Geography grade directly raises that score.

Project Work now pass/fail

Project Work no longer contributes rank points, so the weight on your three H2 grades β€” Geography included β€” is greater than for earlier cohorts.

Indicative grade profiles (IGP)

Local universities publish indicative grade profiles each intake; a higher H2 Geography grade keeps competitive humanities and social-science courses within reach.

H2 vs H1 Geography

MOE offers Geography at H1 and H2; H2 carries the full content load and rank-point weight. We coach the level your JC has placed you in toward its A-Level paper.
