Before you start

What JC parents weigh up first

The O-Level-to-A-Level jump is real

JC content depth and application demand rise sharply over O-Level. A student who coasted at O-Level can fall behind quickly in JC1 β€” addressing it early prevents a much harder JC2 recovery before the Prelims.

The UAS is out of 70 from 2026

From the 2026 cohort the University Admission Score replaces the old 90-point Rank Points and is capped at 70 β€” best three H2 subjects (20 each) plus H1 General Paper (10). The six local universities admit largely on this, so strategic subject focus matters as much as raw effort.

Prioritise the marginal grade

With a heavy subject load, the highest-return junior college tuition often targets the one or two subjects sitting on a grade boundary, where moving from a B to an A shifts 2.5 UAS points and can change which courses stay open.

Project Work is now Pass/Fail

From 2026 Project Work no longer earns UAS points, but a pass is still required and some courses make it an eligibility condition. We keep it in view without over-investing time that the UAS no longer rewards.

How the A-Level and UAS actually work

The paper structure and scoring that junior college tuition is built around.

01

How the University Admission Score is built (from 2026)

From the 2026 cohort the University Admission Score (UAS) replaces the old 90-point Rank Points and is capped at 70. The base is the best three H2 content subjects plus H1 General Paper; a fourth content subject and H1 Mother Tongue are added only when they improve the total.

ComponentWhat it coversMarks / weightTime
Best three H2 content subjectsEach H2 subject scores up to 20 (A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=5). The best three form the bulk of the UAS.60 of 70A=20 each
H1 General Paper (8881)GP is part of the base UAS at half H2 weight (A=10, B=8.75, and so on), so a strong GP grade is worth as much as a quarter of the score.10 of 70A=10
Fourth content subject / H1 Mother TongueA fourth H1/H2 content subject and H1 Mother Tongue are folded in only if they raise the UAS β€” never to drag it down.Counts if it helpsConditional
Project Work (PW)From 2026 PW is graded Pass/Fail and earns no UAS points, though a pass is still required and conditions some course eligibility.0 pointsPass/Fail
02

What the core A-Level papers look like

Junior college tuition in Singapore plans around the actual paper structures, so JC2 drilling matches what the A-Level demands.

H2 Mathematics (9758)

Two 3-hour papers, each 50%. Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics; Paper 2 has Section A Pure (40 marks) and Section B Probability & Statistics (60 marks).

H1 General Paper (8881)

Paper 1 essay (1 of 8 questions, 500-800 words, 1 h 30 min, 50 marks) and Paper 2 comprehension, summary and application question (1 h 30 min, 50 marks).

H2 Economics (9757)

Case-study questions and structured essays across microeconomics and macroeconomics, demanding evaluative argument under tight timing.

H2 Sciences (9478 / 9476 / 9477)

H2 Physics, Chemistry and Biology each combine structured and free-response papers with a Planning and Practical assessment of laboratory skills.

Scoring & strategy

Turning JC grades into a stronger UAS

Where junior college tuition wins and loses the marginal points.

01

How H2 and H1 grades convert to UAS points

Each grade carries a fixed point value. An H2 subject is worth up to 20; an H1 subject and General Paper up to 10. Because the gap between bands is fixed, a single grade lift can change which university courses stay in reach.

  1. A

    H2 = 20 Β· H1/GP = 10

Full points for the band. Three H2 As plus a GP A is the maximum 70.

  2. B

    H2 = 17.5 Β· H1/GP = 8.75

    A common grade-boundary target β€” lifting one H2 B to an A adds 2.5 points.

  3. C

    H2 = 15 Β· H1/GP = 7.5

Solid; often where targeted JC2 coaching recovers the fastest points.

  4. D

    H2 = 12.5 Β· H1/GP = 6.25

Usually signals a content-depth gap that should be rebuilt before drilling.

  5. E

    H2 = 10 Β· H1/GP = 5

The minimum passing A-Level grade; foundations are the priority here.

  6. S

    H2 = 5 Β· (sub-pass)

A sub-pass on an H2 subject β€” worth a few points but well below a full pass.

  7. U

    0 points

Ungraded; no contribution to the UAS.

02

What separates an A-grade A-Level script from a B

Across H2 content subjects the same skill jumps decide the grade. Junior college tuition coaches the right-hand column deliberately.

CriterionB-grade scriptA-grade script
ApplicationRecalls the concept but applies it loosely to the scenarioMaps the exact concept onto the specific data or context given
EvaluationStates a view with thin justificationWeighs trade-offs and reaches a substantiated, qualified judgement
StructurePoints present but loosely sequencedSignposted argument that answers the exact command word
Time managementStrong start, rushed or incomplete final questionMarks-per-minute pacing leaves every question fully attempted
03

Where JC students lose the most marks

Most dropped A-Level marks are predictable habits, fixable with targeted coaching.

Writing everything you know instead of answering the command word ('evaluate', 'discuss', 'to what extent').

Decode the command word first and plan a judgement, so every paragraph earns evaluation marks.

Spreading effort evenly when one or two subjects sit on a grade boundary.

Map each subject's UAS gap and invest where a single band lift adds the most points.

Treating General Paper as content to memorise rather than a thinking-and-language skill.

Drill evaluative argument and current-affairs examples, with timed essay and comprehension practice.

Running out of time on the final H2 question after over-investing early.

Practise marks-per-minute pacing under timed conditions so every question is attempted.

Singapore context

JC tuition and the local university race

01

How a JC result shapes university options in Singapore

Junior college tuition matters because the A-Level feeds directly into the University Admission Score that the six local universities use β€” the SG context that makes JC2 decisive.

Six autonomous universities

NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT and SUSS admit largely on the UAS plus course prerequisites; competitive courses cluster near the top of the 70-point range.

Subject prerequisites

Many courses require specific H2 passes β€” for example H2 Mathematics for engineering or H2 Chemistry for medicine β€” so subject choice and grades both gate admission.

Contrasting subject rule

Science-stream students must take at least one Humanities or Arts subject and arts-stream students at least one Maths or Science subject, which the UAS strategy has to work around.

Project Work eligibility

Although PW no longer scores from 2026, some programmes (such as certain SIT courses) require a PW pass, so it stays on the radar.

02

What a JC student needs in their corner

Beyond content, junior college tuition equips students with the working tools that move the UAS.

Timed past-year papers

A-Level and Prelim papers under exam conditions, marked to the SEAB scheme, surface pacing and presentation gaps early.

Per-subject UAS gap map

Knowing each subject's current band and points gap directs effort to where a single grade lift helps the score most.

GP current-affairs file

A live bank of examples across science, society and ethics so essays and the application question stay relevant and evaluative.

Term-by-term study plan

A schedule that balances a heavy subject load against school deadlines, Prelims and the A-Level timeline.

Why Eduprime

Subject specialists who know the H2 demand

What separates a real JC specialist from generic tuition

JC-subject specialists, one per subject

Tutors who coach a specific H1/H2 subject to the A-Level standard daily β€” matched per subject so H2 Math, Chemistry or Economics depth is never compromised.

Diagnostic before we teach

A free first-session diagnostic per subject pinpoints whether marks are lost to content depth, application technique or exam timing, so coaching targets the real gap.

UAS-strategy, not effort-by-effort

We map each subject's points gap and prioritise the one or two on a grade boundary, where a single band lift moves the University Admission Score most.

Progress you can see

Termly progress notes, timed-paper logs and a per-subject UAS gap map keep parents and students informed between lessons.

Fair pay keeps good tutors

Tutors are paid fairly and on time, so the strong JC specialists stay with your child through to the A-Level instead of churning mid-year.

What families say

Parents on the JC grades that turned around

Representative experiences from families we've worked with

My son did well at O-Level but JC1 H2 Chemistry hit him hard. The diagnostic showed it was application, not content, and the weekly coaching steadied his grades by the end of JC1.

Mrs Tan W.

Parent of JC1 boy Β· Bishan Β· 1-to-1 home

We mapped which subjects were closest to a grade boundary and focused the intensive sessions there. The UAS gap report made the priorities obvious instead of just doing more of everything.

Mr R. Kumar

Parent of JC2 girl Β· Serangoon Β· JC2 Intensive

My daughter could write but kept missing the GP command words. The tutor drilled evaluative essays and timing, and her practice marks became far steadier before the Prelims.

Mdm Sarah A.

Parent of JC2 girl Β· Pasir Ris Β· 1-to-1 online

Honest from the start β€” no big promises, just steady weekly H2 Math work and clear termly feedback. That straight talk is why we stayed.

Mrs Goh L.

Parent of JC1 boy Β· Clementi Β· 1-to-1 home

The free diagnostic alone told us his H2 Economics essays were the weak point. We continued and the case-study marks climbed over two terms.

Mr Lee K.

Parent of JC2 boy Β· Sengkang Β· Small group
