H2 Math, demystified

What the two H2 Math papers really put a student through

A-Level H2 Math tuition in Singapore prepares JC1 and JC2 students for the Singapore-Cambridge A-Level H2 Mathematics examination (SEAB 9758), which spans pure mathematics, probability and statistics. A good tutor closes the gap between JC lecture pace and A-Level depth, drilling Paper 1 and Paper 2 to the standard the marking scheme rewards.

What JC families weigh up before A-Level H2 Math tuition

O-Level success does not transfer automatically

H2 Math demands justification, multi-step application and pace far beyond A-Math. Strong A-Math students routinely struggle in JC1 — the jump in rigour is the real obstacle.

Build the JC1 foundation early

H2 Math is cumulative and fast. Securing functions, calculus and early statistics in JC1 prevents a compounding deficit that becomes very hard to repair before the JC2 prelims.

H2 gates STEM university courses

Most NUS, NTU and SMU science, engineering and computing courses expect H2 Math. For STEM-bound students it sits among the most strategically critical subjects on the timetable.

Application questions decide the grade

Routine technique secures method marks; the distinction grade is won on framing and solving unfamiliar application and context questions, which we drill deliberately.

Exam craft

How the A-Level H2 Math papers are actually built

The 9758 structure and a real question, solved.

01

How SEAB structures the H2 Mathematics (9758) papers

H2 Math is examined in two papers of equal weight, each 3 hours and 100 marks, so each paper is worth 50% of the subject. Paper 1 is wholly Pure Mathematics; Paper 2 splits Pure Mathematics and Probability & Statistics. An approved graphing calculator and the MF27 formula list are allowed throughout.

ComponentWhat it coversMarks / weightTime
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics)Ten to twelve questions of varying length on functions and graphs, calculus, sequences and series, vectors, complex numbers and differential equations. At least one question sets the mathematics in a real-world science or engineering context and carries at least 12 marks.100 marks (50%)3 h
Paper 2, Section A (Pure Mathematics)Four to five pure questions carrying 40 of the paper's 100 marks — the bridge that keeps pure technique fresh on the second paper.40 marks(within 3 h)
Paper 2, Section B (Probability & Statistics)Six to eight questions worth 60 marks across permutations and combinations, probability, discrete and normal distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing, and correlation and regression.60 marks(within 3 h)
02

A real H2 Math integration-by-parts question, worked

The problem

Find the exact value of the definite integral of x ln x with respect to x, from x = 1 to x = e.

Worked solution

  1. 1Choose parts: let u = ln x (so du = (1/x) dx) and dv = x dx (so v = x^2 / 2). This pairing differentiates away the logarithm.
  2. 2Apply integration by parts: the integral of x ln x = (x^2 / 2) ln x − the integral of (x^2 / 2)(1/x) dx.
  3. 3Simplify the remaining integral: (x^2 / 2)(1/x) = x/2, whose integral is x^2 / 4.
  4. 4So the antiderivative is (x^2 / 2) ln x − x^2 / 4.
  5. 5Evaluate from 1 to e. At x = e: (e^2 / 2)(1) − e^2 / 4 = e^2 / 4. At x = 1: (1/2)(0) − 1/4 = −1/4.
  6. 6Subtract: e^2 / 4 − (−1/4) = (e^2 + 1) / 4.

Answer: (e^2 + 1) / 4

The decisive move is choosing u so that it differentiates toward something simpler — set u = ln x, never the algebraic factor. Then keep the working exact: the question asks for the exact value, so leaving e and the fractions symbolic earns the accuracy mark that a decimal answer forfeits.

03

The LIATE-and-justify routine we drill for 'show that' and exact-value questions

The same four-move routine recovers most lost marks on H2 calculus, proof and application questions. It turns a panicked guess into a marking-scheme-friendly answer.

Read-classify-justify-check
  1. 1

    Read the instruction words first

Underline 'exact value', 'without a calculator', 'hence', 'show that' and 'deduce'. Each is a marking instruction: 'exact' forbids decimals, 'hence' forces you to use the previous part, 'show that' means the working — not the answer — earns the marks.

  2. 2

    Classify the technique before writing

Name the tool out loud — integration by parts (using LIATE to pick u), partial fractions, a substitution, a Maclaurin expansion or a known MF27 result. Choosing the wrong tool is the most expensive mistake; thirty seconds of classification saves ten minutes of dead-end algebra.

  3. 3

Justify every line for the method marks

Write the rule you are applying, then the substitution, then the simplification — one idea per line. In a 'show that' the answer is already printed, so the examiner can only reward the explicit logical steps between the start and that printed result.

  4. 4

Check against the calculator, then against the context

Verify a definite integral or a stationary point numerically on the graphing calculator, then ask whether the answer is sane in the question's real-world frame — a negative probability or a 4-metre human height signals a slip to fix before moving on.

Scoring & strategy

Turning H2 Math marks into the grade universities count

Where A-Level H2 Math points are won and lost.

01

A-Level H2 Math grades and how universities read them

H2 Math is reported on the A-E pass scale of the Singapore-Cambridge A-Level. Under the revised University Admission Score that takes effect from the 2026 cohort, each H2 grade carries half-mark Rank Points (A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10), and faculties publish an Indicative Grade Profile showing the grades of the middle 80% of accepted applicants.

  1. A

    Distinction — 20 Rank Points

The full-weight H2 grade; the working target for competitive STEM courses at NUS, NTU and SUTD.

  2. B

    17.5 Rank Points

A strong grade that keeps most engineering and computing options open.

  3. C

    15 Rank Points

A solid grade; widens choices where the Indicative Grade Profile sits lower.

  4. D

    12.5 Rank Points

A passing grade that usually falls below the competitive STEM range for the most-subscribed NUS and NTU courses.

  5. E

Minimum pass — 10 Rank Points

The lowest passing H2 grade; it satisfies a subject pass requirement, and lifting a borderline student from E to C or B is where most of our late-JC2 work lands.

  6. S / U

    Sub-pass (5 RP) / Ungraded (0 RP)

An S grade is a sub-H2 pass worth 5 Rank Points; a U is ungraded and scores nothing. Clearing borderline candidates out of this zone is the first priority when a student starts late.

02

Where H2 Math marks are usually lost

Most dropped A-Level marks are predictable habits, not gaps in knowledge — and each one is trainable.

Treating a 'show that' question loosely and skipping the justification the marking scheme demands.

Write each logical step explicitly; in a 'show that' the working earns the marks, since the answer is already given.

Reaching for the graphing calculator on a question that says 'without the use of a calculator' or 'find the exact value'.

Read the instruction first — 'exact' means leave surds, e and fractions symbolic, and decimal answers forfeit the accuracy mark.

Stating a hypothesis test conclusion without referencing the significance level or context.

Always compare the p-value to the stated significance level and conclude in the words of the problem's context.

Mismanaging time so Paper 2 statistics is rushed after over-investing in Paper 1 pure questions.

Drill timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 separately so the 3-hour pace is built in before the A-Level.

03

What separates a borderline pass from a distinction script

We grade practice scripts against the same dimensions an A-Level marker weighs, so a student can see exactly which behaviour moves the grade — and we target the next band up, one row at a time.

CriterionBorderline (D/E)Solid (B/C)Distinction (A)
Method-mark disciplineJumps to the answer; loses method marks when the final figure slipsShows most steps but skips justification on harder partsEvery logical step is written; full method credit even when an arithmetic slip costs the accuracy mark
Reading the instruction wordsMisses 'exact', 'hence' and 'without a calculator' cuesCatches them on routine questions, slips under time pressureReflexively decodes every instruction and answers in the demanded form
Application & 'show that' framingFreezes on unfamiliar real-world context questionsSets up the model but stalls on the multi-step finishTranslates context into mathematics cleanly and carries the 12-mark application question to the end
Statistics conclusion wordingStates 'reject H0' with no context or significance levelReferences the level but omits the contextual sentenceCompares to the significance level and concludes in the problem's own words for full marks

Singapore context

H2 Math and the route to a Singapore university place

01

Why the A-Level H2 Math grade carries so much weight in Singapore

H2 Math is the content subject that most directly gates Singapore STEM admissions — the local context that makes this grade strategically critical.

STEM course prerequisite

Most NUS, NTU and SUTD science, engineering, computing and data courses list H2 Math as a required subject; without it, whole faculties are closed off.

Rank Points & UAS

From the 2026 cohort the University Admission Score is capped at 70 points: three H2 content subjects worth up to 20 each (60) plus H1 General Paper worth up to 10. A fourth H1/H2 content subject is counted only when it raises the score, and Project Work is now pass/fail and excluded — so a strong H2 Math grade weighs more on the total than it ever did.

Indicative Grade Profile

Every course publishes an Indicative Grade Profile each cycle; for the most-subscribed STEM programmes it commonly sits at AAA or AAB, which makes an H2 Math A the practical working target rather than a stretch goal.

H2 vs H1 Math

H1 Math (8865) is the narrower, statistics-led one-paper course; H2 Math (9758) is the fuller two-paper course STEM faculties require. We coach toward whichever the student is reading for the A-Level.

02

The H2 Math toolkit every JC student should master before the A-Level

Beyond the syllabus content, these are the working tools a confident H2 candidate uses fluently in the exam hall — and what each one is actually for.

MF27 List of Formulae

The SEAB-issued booklet (it replaced MF26 from 2025) carries the trigonometric, calculus, vector and statistical results you may quote without proof. Knowing exactly what is in it — and what you must derive yourself — saves minutes and prevents wasted re-derivation under time pressure.

Approved graphing calculator

Permitted throughout both papers for solving equations, checking integrals, drawing curves and reading off distributions. We drill the keystroke routines and, just as important, when a question's 'without a calculator' instruction forbids its use.

The bridge from A-Math to H2 calculus

Differentiation, integration and the chain and product rules carry over from O-Level A-Math (4049). We make that bridge explicit so JC1 students reuse what they already know instead of relearning it from scratch.

A worked-solution review log

After each timed paper we log the lost marks by type — instruction misread, method gap, statistics wording — so revision targets the recurring leak rather than re-doing already-secure questions.

Why Eduprime

What separates a 9758 specialist from general maths tuition

What sets a genuine 9758 specialist apart from general maths tuition

JC H2 Math specialists, not generalists

Tutors who teach the SEAB 9758 syllabus and the A-Level marking standard as their daily work — fluent in the rigour, the application questions and the statistics half that trip students up.

Diagnostic before we teach

A free first-session baseline pinpoints whether the gap is foundation, rigour or application technique, so coaching targets the real obstacle instead of redoing secure topics.

Marks-strategy, not topic-by-topic

We prioritise the question types that move a student between grades — the 12-mark application question, 'show that' method marks and statistics conclusion wording — rather than weighting every topic equally.

Timed-paper accountability

Past-year Paper 1 and Paper 2 are sat under three-hour conditions and marked to the SEAB scheme, with lost-mark logs that show parents exactly where the grade is leaking.

Fair pay keeps strong tutors

Tutors are paid fairly and on time, so the good JC specialists stay with a student through to the A-Level instead of churning mid-year.
