Science Tuition in Singapore

Science tuition in Singapore is structured coaching that follows the MOE science syllabus β€” from Primary Science inquiry topics and PSLE open-ended answering, through Lower Secondary integrated Science, to Upper Secondary pure or combined Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A tutor corrects misconceptions, builds practical and data-analysis skills, and trains the structured phrasing PSLE and O-Level markers reward.

Concepts, phrasing and the practical

Where science marks are won across the MOE syllabus

Science tuition in Singapore follows the MOE syllabus from Primary Science, where the PSLE rewards inquiry-based thinking, through Lower Secondary Science and into Upper Secondary pure or combined Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A good tutor concentrates on the experiment-design reasoning and open-ended answering style that PSLE and O-Level markers expect.

Decide this first

The science decisions worth getting right early

PSLE Science marks are lost on phrasing

In the open-ended section, a correct idea written without the cause-and-effect link the marking scheme expects scores zero. A large part of Primary Science tuition is training the keyword phrasing and answer structure around content the child often already knows.

Combined and Pure Science are different commitments

At O-Level, Combined Science (5086/5087/5088) packs two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology into one subject; Pure Science (6091/6092/6093) studies each as a full separate subject with greater depth and its own practical paper. The choice shapes subject combinations and JC eligibility, so plan it deliberately.

Fix misconceptions before they compound

Science concepts stack β€” a shaky Primary grasp of energy or matter resurfaces in Secondary Physics and Chemistry. A tutor runs a misconception diagnostic first so the foundation is corrected before the next level builds on top of it.

The school-based practical counts toward the science grade

Upper Secondary Science includes a school-based practical β€” Paper 3 in the pure sciences, Paper 5 in Combined Science. Planning, accurate observation recording and inference are coachable skills, so we build them alongside written-paper technique rather than treating theory and practical separately.

Inside the PSLE paper

How PSLE Science is actually marked

The paper structure and open-ended phrasing behind the marks.

01

How the PSLE Science paper is built

PSLE Science is one written paper of 100 marks taken over 1 hour 45 minutes, reported as a single Achievement Level (AL1–AL8). From 2026 the weighting shifted toward multiple choice: the paper splits into Booklet A and Booklet B, both drawn from the five MOE themes.

ComponentWhat it coversMarks / weightTime
Booklet A30 multiple-choice questions, 2 marks each, across all five themes β€” Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Energy, Interactions. The 2026 reweighting raised this booklet from 56 to 60 marks.60 markswithin 1 h 45 min
Booklet B10 to 11 open-ended / structured questions that demand cause-process-effect reasoning in the candidate's own words. The 2026 reweighting trimmed this booklet from 44 to 40 marks.40 markswithin 1 h 45 min
Process skillsAcross both booklets, the paper tests inquiry skills β€” observing, comparing, inferring, predicting and interpreting experiment data β€” rather than rewarding recall alone.woven throughoutβ€”

A PSLE Science open-ended answer, marked the SEAB way

The problem

A student leaves two identical wet towels out to dry: Towel X is spread open on a line, Towel Y is folded into a bundle. After one hour, Towel X is dry but Towel Y is still damp. Explain why Towel X dried faster. [2]

Worked solution

  1. 1Name the concept the question is testing β€” this is evaporation, under the Energy theme, so the answer must talk about water gaining heat and turning to water vapour.
  2. 2State the key variable that differs: Towel X has a larger surface area exposed to the surroundings than the folded Towel Y.
  3. 3Link the variable to the rate: a larger exposed surface area means more water can gain heat from the surroundings and evaporate at the same time.
  4. 4Close the cause-process-effect chain: so water evaporates faster from Towel X, and it dries faster than Towel Y.

Answer: Towel X has a larger exposed surface area, so more water gains heat and evaporates at a faster rate, drying it faster than the folded Towel Y.

The mark is not for knowing 'evaporation' β€” it is for the complete chain: bigger surface area, more water gains heat and evaporates, faster drying. Drop any link in that chain and PSLE Science markers withhold the mark, which is why phrasing is where most Primary students lose points.

03

The CPE answer frame we drill for open-ended Science

The single most repeatable lift in Primary Science tuition is a fixed scaffold for open-ended answers. Most children know the science; CPE forces it onto the page in the order SEAB markers reward, line by line.

Cause β†’ Process β†’ Effect (CPE)
  1. 1

    Underline what changed (Cause)

Read the question and name the one variable that differs between the two situations β€” bigger surface area, more light, thicker insulation. This becomes the first clause of the answer.

  2. 2

    Name the science process

State the syllabus process the change drives β€” evaporation, heat gain/loss, photosynthesis, dissolving β€” using the exact keyword from the theme, not a vague synonym.

  3. 3

    State the measurable effect

Finish with the observable outcome the question asks about β€” dries faster, temperature rises, plant grows taller β€” so cause, process and effect form one unbroken chain.

  4. 4

Check the chain has no gap

Re-read the answer as if you were the marker: every link present earns the mark; a missing middle step loses it even when the conclusion is correct.

Pure, Combined and the codes

The science codes that decide the route

How the O-Level and A-Level science pathways are actually coded.

01

The MOE / SEAB science syllabus map, PSLE to A-Level

Each stage of science tuition targets a specific MOE syllabus and assessment style. The code matters, because practical weighting and depth differ sharply between Combined and Pure.

0009 / 5086–5088 / 6091–6093 / 9476–9478

Primary Science (PSLE 0009)

Inquiry-based across five themes β€” Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Energy, Interactions; one written paper, AL1–AL8. Foundation Science (0039) is the lighter MOE track, graded AL A to AL C, for some candidates.

Lower Secondary Science

Integrated Sec 1–2 Science β€” particulate model, cells, energy, electricity and lab skills β€” the bridge before the Sec 3 split into separate subjects.

O-Level Combined Science (5086 / 5087 / 5088)

Two of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in one O-Level grade β€” 5086 Phy/Chem, 5087 Phy/Bio, 5088 Chem/Bio β€” with a shared Paper 5 practical.

O-Level Pure Science (6091 / 6092 / 6093)

Full-depth single subjects β€” 6091 Physics, 6092 Chemistry, 6093 Biology β€” each with its own school-based practical (Paper 3).

A-Level H1 / H2 Sciences (9478 / 9476 / 9477)

H2 Physics 9478, H2 Chemistry 9476, H2 Biology 9477 for JC, first examined in 2026; H1 sciences offer the lighter contrasting-subject load.

02

What a Pure-Science answer looks like across the band

When parents ask what separates a B from an A in O-Level Pure Science, it is rarely more facts β€” it is precision of language and reasoning. This is the rubric our tutors coach against on every structured question.

CriterionBorderline (C–D)Solid (B)Top (A)

03

Where science marks are usually lost

Across PSLE and O-Level, most dropped science marks come from a handful of predictable, coachable habits rather than gaps in knowledge.

Writing 'because of evaporation' or naming the concept without explaining the process and effect.

Drill the cause-process-effect chain so every open-ended answer states the variable, the process, and the resulting change.

Confusing variables in an experiment β€” changing more than one thing or mislabelling the variable kept constant.

Train the independent / dependent / controlled framework so a fair test is set up and described correctly.

Quoting data from a graph or table without making the inference the question asks for.

Practise 'data, trend, conclusion' so observation is always converted into a scored inference.

Treating Pure and Combined Science as the same depth, then under-preparing for the Pure practical (Paper 3).

Plan the route early and build planning, observation and inference skills for the school-based practical alongside theory.

What the grade decides

How science choices shape the JC and poly pathway

01

Why the science route matters in the Singapore system

Science marks in Singapore rarely sit in isolation β€” each grade feeds the next checkpoint, from PSLE posting to JC subject eligibility.

PSLE Science AL

Science is one of four PSLE subjects whose Achievement Levels sum to the PSLE Score, which ranges from 4 (the best) to 32 and decides secondary posting β€” a stronger AL here lowers, and so improves, that total.

Full Subject-Based Banding

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, Lower Secondary results decide whether a student takes Pure sciences (6091/6092/6093), Combined Science (5086/5087/5088), or a mix at G3, G2 or G1 level β€” which in turn gates later options.

JC eligibility

A strong O-Level science profile is usually expected before taking H2 sciences (9478/9476/9477) in JC; Pure Physics or Chemistry is the common prerequisite for the most demanding JC combinations. JC admission runs on the L1R5 aggregate, moving to L1R4 from 2028.

Poly and IP / IB routes

Polytechnic diploma admission weighs relevant subject results through the ELR2B2 aggregate, while IP and IB students bypass the O-Level checkpoint and sit IB Group 4 sciences (SL/HL) with their own internal assessment.

02

What a science learner works with between lessons

Coaching only sticks when the student has the right materials to practise on. These are the resources a matched science tutor builds the week around.

SEAB-format past papers

Timed Booklet A / Booklet B and O-Level structured papers marked to the official scheme, so practice mirrors the real paper rather than generic worksheets.

Misconception logbook

A running record of the specific concepts the student gets wrong, so revision targets the real gaps instead of re-reading everything.

Keyword and definition bank

The exact syllabus terms PSLE and O-Level markers reward, drilled until precise phrasing becomes automatic under time pressure.

Practical skills checklist

Planning, observation recording and inference steps for the school-based practical (Paper 3 / Paper 5), rehearsed alongside theory.

Why Eduprime

Where our science tutors make the difference

What separates a real MOE-science specialist from generic tuition

Tutors who know each science syllabus by code

Specialists fluent in PSLE Science (0009), O-Level Pure (6091/6092/6093) and Combined (5086/5087/5088), and H2 sciences (9478/9476/9477) β€” so coaching matches the exact paper your child sits.

Misconception diagnostic before we teach

A free first-session diagnostic finds whether marks are lost to a shaky concept, weak open-ended phrasing or careless practical reasoning, so the plan targets the real gap.

We coach phrasing, not just facts

Most children already know the science. We drill the cause-process-effect answer structure PSLE and O-Level markers reward, so understanding finally converts into marks.

Practical skills built alongside theory

Planning, observation recording and inference for the school-based practical β€” Paper 3 (Pure) or Paper 5 (Combined) β€” are trained in step with written-paper technique, not left to chance.

Fair pay keeps good tutors

Tutors are paid fairly and on time, so a strong science specialist stays with your child through the terminal exam instead of churning mid-year.
