H2 Math Tuition in Singapore
H2 Math tuition in Singapore prepares JC students for the A-Level H2 Mathematics syllabus 9758, covering pure mathematics, probability and statistics over two 3-hour papers. Paper 1 is entirely Pure Mathematics; Paper 2 splits into Pure (Section A, 40 marks) and Probability and Statistics (Section B, 60 marks). A tutor closes the gap between school pacing and A-Level depth, drills the real-world application question and trains method-mark presentation toward the best possible rank points.

Where H2 Math tuition fits in the Singapore pathway
Mapped to MOE levels and the A-Level
- 1
Secondary 3β4/5
O-Level Additional Mathematics (calculus, trigonometry) β the assumed foundation for H2 Math.
- 2
Integrated Programme
School-specific pacing that bypasses O-Level and feeds directly into A-Level H2 Mathematics.
- 3
Junior College 1
Pure math foundations: functions, sequences, calculus, vectors and complex numbers, building toward A-Level depth.
- 4
Junior College 2
Statistics, differential equations, the application question and full Paper 1/Paper 2 drilling for the GCE A-Level H2 Math 9758.
- 5
University admission
The H2 Math grade is one of three H2 subjects counted in the 70-point UAS and is a prerequisite for many NUS/NTU/SMU/SUTD/SIT courses.
Read before JC1
Four things that decide an H2 Math grade
H2 Math is two papers of equal weight
The 9758 syllabus is examined over two 3-hour papers worth 100 marks each, each carrying 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is pure mathematics; Paper 2 mixes pure with probability and statistics. Tuition has to keep both pure and statistics topics exam-ready in parallel, not sequentially.
Method marks reward shown working
A-Level markers award method marks. A student who reaches the correct answer but skips the working still loses marks under exam conditions. A large part of H2 Math tuition is training the structured presentation and graphing-calculator discipline the marking scheme expects.
A-Math is the assumed foundation
H2 Math builds directly on O-Level A-Math calculus and trigonometry. A shaky A-Math base resurfaces fast in JC1 integration and differentiation; bridge it early rather than during prelim season.
H2 Math gates many degree courses and counts for rank points
Numerous NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD and SIT engineering, computing and science courses require or prefer H2 Math, and from 2026 it is one of three H2 subjects scored in the 70-point UAS. Plan tuition with the intended university course and target grade in mind.

Exam craft
How H2 Math is actually solved
The technique and paper structure behind the A-Level marks.
A real H2 Math problem, solved the A-Level way
The problem
The complex number z satisfies |z - 3| = |z - 3i|. Find the locus of z and describe it geometrically, then find the value of z on this locus with the smallest modulus.
Worked solution
- 1Interpret |z - 3| = |z - 3i| as 'the distance from z to the point (3, 0) equals the distance from z to the point (0, 3)'. A point equidistant from two fixed points lies on the perpendicular bisector of the segment joining them.
- 2Find that bisector. The midpoint of (3, 0) and (0, 3) is (1.5, 1.5); the segment has gradient -1, so the perpendicular bisector has gradient 1 and passes through (1.5, 1.5). Its equation is y = x β the line of points where the real and imaginary parts are equal.
- 3So the locus is the line y = x in the Argand diagram; in complex form, z = t + ti for real t.
- 4Smallest modulus means the point on this line closest to the origin β the foot of the perpendicular from O to y = x, which by symmetry is the origin's nearest point along the line. The closest point of y = x to the origin is (0, 0) itself, giving |z| = 0; since the line passes through the origin, the minimum modulus is 0 at z = 0.
- 5Check: at z = 0, |0 - 3| = 3 and |0 - 3i| = 3, so the condition holds and z = 0 lies on the locus. Minimum modulus confirmed.
Answer: Locus: the line y = x (perpendicular bisector of the points 3 and 3i); minimum modulus is 0 at z = 0.
The decisive A-Level move is reading a complex-number equation geometrically before any algebra. Recognising |z - a| = |z - b| as a perpendicular bisector turns a daunting modulus equation into a one-line locus.
How the H2 Math 9758 papers are built
H2 Mathematics is examined over two 3-hour papers, each worth 100 marks and each carrying 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is entirely pure mathematics; Paper 2 mixes pure with probability and statistics.
| Component | What it covers | Marks / weight | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 β Pure Mathematics | 10 to 12 questions of varying length on the pure mathematics topics (functions, calculus, vectors, complex numbers, differential equations). | 100 marks (50%) | 3 h |
| Paper 2, Section A β Pure Mathematics | Further pure-mathematics questions drawn from the same topic pool as Paper 1. | 40 marks | (within Paper 2's 3 h) |
| Paper 2, Section B β Probability and Statistics | Permutations, probability, distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing and linear regression. The larger half of Paper 2. | 60 marks | (within Paper 2's 3 h) |
| The application question | At least one question on applying mathematics to a real-world context (sciences or engineering), worth 12 or more marks and often spanning several topics. | 12+ marks | Appears across the papers |
Scoring & strategy
Turning H2 Math marks into rank points
Where A-Level Math points are won and lost.
How H2 Math grades convert to A-Level rank points
From the 2026 cohort, the University Admission Score (UAS) uses 70 rank points: three H2 grades plus the best H1 grade. Each H2 band carries the points below, so Math β one of three H2 subjects counted β directly shapes the score.
- A
20 rank points
The top H2 band; the strongest possible contribution to the 70-point UAS.
- B
17.5 rank points
A high distinction, 2.5 points below an A β a single band worth chasing for competitive courses.
- C
15 rank points
Solid performance; often the realistic target band for a topic-by-topic recovery plan.
- D
12.5 rank points
A pass; usually signals specific topics β frequently the statistics half β still need consolidating.
- E
10 rank points
The minimum full A-Level pass; foundational pure-math gaps typically sit here.
- S
5 rank points
A subsidiary pass β below the standard required for a full A-Level grade in the subject.
- U
0 rank points
Ungraded; indicates core concepts need rebuilding before exam technique can help.
Where H2 Math marks are usually lost
Most dropped H2 Math marks are not raw inability β they are predictable, fixable habits under exam pressure.
Treating the statistics half as 'easy marks' and under-revising distributions and hypothesis testing.
Drill Paper 2 Section B deliberately β it carries 60 marks, more than the pure section, and rewards precise notation and interpretation of the conclusion.
Writing only the final answer on multi-step pure questions, skipping the working.
Show every method step β A-Level markers award method marks even when an arithmetic slip costs the final accuracy mark.
Relying on the graphing calculator without stating the supporting working the question demands.
Use the calculator for speed and checking, but present the mathematical reasoning the mark scheme expects, especially in 'show that' and exact-form questions.
Mis-pacing across the two 3-hour papers and leaving the application question unfinished.
Practise a timed budget, banking secure marks first, then ring-fence enough time for the 12-mark real-world application question.
Method mastery
The H2 Math toolkit our tuition drills
The integration-by-parts decision routine
Integration is where many JC students stall, because the hardest step is choosing the right technique under time pressure. We drill a decision routine before any integral is attempted.
- 1
Classify the integrand first
Before integrating, name the form: standard result, substitution candidate, partial fractions, or a product needing by-parts. Naming it stops the blind trial-and-error that burns exam time.
- 2
Apply the LIATE order for by-parts
When a product appears, choose u by the LIATE priority (Logarithmic, Inverse-trig, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential) so the derivative simplifies rather than complicates.
- 3
Track the sign and the dv carefully
Write the by-parts formula in full each time and label u, du, dv, v in a small grid β the most common dropped mark is a sign error in the second term.
- 4
Verify by differentiating the answer
When time allows, differentiate the result back; if it does not return the integrand, the slip is found before it costs the accuracy mark.
The H2 Math exam toolkit
Beyond content, these are the habits and tools our H2 Math tuition makes automatic before the A-Level.
Graphing calculator fluency
Fast, accurate use of the approved GC for solving, integrating numerically and reading distributions saves minutes that are reinvested in the application question.
The formula list (MF26)
Knowing exactly what the provided formula booklet does and does not contain stops students wasting time deriving what is given, or assuming a result that must be derived.
Standard-result recall
Instant recall of common derivatives, integrals and series expansions keeps pure questions moving so harder parts get the time they need.
Structured solution layout
A consistent layout β define, work, conclude β earns method marks and makes 'show that' steps unambiguous to the marker.
Singapore context
H2 Math, rank points and university admission
How an H2 Math grade shapes a Singapore university application
H2 Math is rarely taken in isolation β its grade feeds the rank points and prerequisites that decide JC students' university options, the SG context that makes the subject matter.
The 70-point UAS (from 2026)
The University Admission Score now totals 70 rank points: three H2 grades plus the best H1. Math is usually one of those three H2 subjects, so its band moves the score directly.
Course prerequisites
Many NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD and SIT engineering, computing, science and quantitative-business courses list H2 Math as required or strongly preferred β a weak grade can close doors regardless of total rank points.
H2 versus H1 Math (8865)
H1 Math is a lighter one-paper course sufficient for non-quantitative courses; H2 Math (9758) is the fuller two-paper course most STEM courses expect. We coach the level the student is actually sitting.
From L1R5 to the A-Level
Students reach JC through the O-Level L1R5 aggregate; once in JC, H2 Math becomes the high-stakes A-Level subject that carries that pure-math momentum into university selection.
