When a Singapore or overseas university asks for 'IB Mathematics HL', it almost always means Analysis and Approaches (AA) HL. Competitive Engineering, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics courses at NUS, NTU and universities such as Imperial expect AA HL, not AI HL. Confirm the exact wording on the course page before committing to AI if a STEM degree is the goal.

The GDC is examinable skill, not a shortcut

Because every AI paper is calculator-permitted, marks reward correct setup and interpretation rather than hand arithmetic. A school surveys whether a student's preferred study mode (online vs in-person) is independent of their year group. Of 150 students, the results were — Year 1: 28 online, 22 in-person; Year 2: 12 online, 38 in-person; Year 3: 20 online, 30 in-person. Test at the 5% significance level whether study mode is independent of year group.

  1. 1State the hypotheses: H0 — study mode is independent of year group; H1 — study mode is not independent of year group.
  2. 2Build the contingency table on the GDC (a 3 x 2 matrix). Degrees of freedom = (rows - 1)(columns - 1) = (3 - 1)(2 - 1) = 2.
  3. 3The GDC computes expected values (e.g. 50 x 60 / 150 = 20 expected 'online' per year) and returns the test statistic chi-squared ≈ 10.7 with p ≈ 0.005.

Each IB subject is graded 1–7. AI contributes one of six subject grades; the Diploma total is built up to 45, and university offers read both the subject grade and the total.
