Part-time tutor jobs for SMU students

Bras Basah sits near the middle of the map, so an SMU tutor can close a seminar and open a lesson in a central estate the same evening, most often in Economics, General Paper or A-Level English.

Why tutor while you study

Built for SMU students

A campus near the middle of the map

Travel is the hour nobody pays for. From Bras Basah and Bencoolen underneath your own campus, homes in Toa Payoh, Novena, Bishan and Kallang are a few stops away, and Dhoby Ghaut puts three lines within a walk. That keeps two families on two different lines comfortable to hold inside one week, and it keeps your earnings tied to the hours you actually teach.

You have already been graded on the hard part

Seminar rooms at SMU score you on holding a position in front of forty people and taking the counter-argument on the chin. An H2 Economics or General Paper student needs that same move on paper: a claim, the evidence, then an honest weighing of the other side. Your sessions go into drawing that move out of a student whose first instinct is to summarise the textbook.

Rubrics are a language you already read

Written submissions at SMU come back against a rubric, so you know what one criterion does to a grade. Bring that eye to a marked GP essay or an Economics case answer: the student sees which band the paragraph sits in and what the mark scheme rewards, and your feedback lands on a specific sentence.

A term you bid for is a term you can promise

Because you assemble your own week through bidding before the term starts, you know in week one which weekday afternoons stay clear until finals. That lets you lock a fixed slot and keep it, and a slot held for a whole term is the promise we most want to make to a parent. Weekday afternoon and early-evening slots are the hardest ones on our board to fill.

Questions

Tutoring as an SMU student — FAQ

I read Business or Accountancy. Can I teach H2 Economics?

Yes, and your degree usually carries you to the doorstep of it. The theory is familiar; what takes reading is the exam's own vocabulary, meaning the command words, how marks are split between the essay and the case-study papers, and how far an evaluation has to travel before it earns its band. Before we match you with a student, we will ask you to read the MOE syllabus document for the subject and talk through a past-year question with us.

My student's school exams are a few weeks away. What should the sessions become?

The teaching narrows. Papers get written against the clock, marked against the syllabus mark scheme, and the review afterwards runs longer than the writing did. Spend the hours on the topics that are leaking marks and let the secure topics rest. Tell the parent plainly which gaps will close in time and which will not. Some families ask for shorter, more frequent sessions in that stretch; settle the shape early so nobody is negotiating it in the week of the paper.

What happens to my student during my own finals and reading period?

Give us your exam dates as soon as the term calendar is out and we will settle the pause with the family before recess week. A break of two or three weeks agreed in advance sits fine with most parents; a Sunday-night cancellation because a paper crept up is what does the damage. If your student is in an exam season of their own, we will look at covering that stretch with another tutor and handing the placement back to you afterwards, and we will describe that to the family in exactly those terms.

Can I teach from campus between classes?

An online session from a quiet room on campus works well in the gap between a morning seminar and an afternoon one, and it suits revision, marking review and walking through a past paper together. In-person lessons in the central estates fit the end of your day. A mix of both is common, and we build the mix around the timetable you send us.

Can I teach General Paper if my degree sits outside the humanities?

GP asks for a defensible position carried by current, specific evidence, which is the habit SMU marks you on every week. Law, Social Sciences and Economics students take to it quickly, and so do Computing students who read widely. Be honest with yourself about the marking: essays come in weekly, and useful feedback reaches the structure of the argument, the quality of the examples and the expression, which takes longer than the lesson itself.

Can I keep teaching through the special terms from May to July?

That stretch is one of the most useful in our year. Families want intensive work over the June school holidays, and an SMU student carrying one special-term module or an internship in the CBD can usually hold late-afternoon and evening sessions nearby. If you go overseas for exchange or an internship abroad, give us the dates and we will hold your profile until you are back.
