Maths Tutor — Primary Heuristics to JC Calculus
One road runs from the bar model to integration by substitution. We hire tutors who can teach anywhere along it, and who can find the exact point where a student fell off.

A maths year has two shapes, and a tutor has to be good in both. Through the earlier months the work is reconstruction: a P6 pupil who cannot set up a ratio question is usually still short of part-whole thinking from P4, and a Sec 3 student drowning in A-Maths differentiation is often guessing at index laws. Once prelim scripts come back and the written papers are the next thing standing in the calendar, reconstruction narrows into triage. A two-year-old fracture will not close in the weeks that remain, so you read the script line by line for where the marks actually leaked, keep the heuristics a pupil can still reach for while a clock runs, and rehearse the pacing each paper demands — PSLE Paper 1 sat without a calculator, Paper 2 where having one tempts a child to leave the working unwritten. That written line is the first thing dropped in the closing stretch of a paper, and holding on to it under time pressure is teachable. Eduprime hires maths tutors who work well in the patient half of the year and in the crowded half, across the model method and PSLE heuristics, the E-Maths and A-Maths split at secondary, H1 and H2 at JC, plus IB Maths AA or AI and IGCSE for families on those tracks.
Why experienced maths tutors take these assignments
- One student can need two different tutors inside a single year, and here you get to be both — the person who walks them back to P4 part-whole thinking during a quiet term, and the person who triages a prelim script when technique, presentation and pacing are the only things still movable.
- Procedural marks are the cheapest marks in Singapore maths. The A-Maths (4049) syllabus states plainly that omission of essential working loses marks, so a student who learns to write the line they habitually skip picks up marks without studying a single new topic — and the gain shows inside a couple of timed papers.
- Assignments arrive already matched by level and area. No advertising in group chats, no bidding against other tutors, no chasing a family that has already engaged someone else.
- Hourly pay in SGD, on schedule. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and sit at the upper end of the band.
- One-to-one and small groups, in the family's home or online, so the geography and the weekly load stay your decision.
The role
What a maths engagement actually asks of you
- Open with a diagnostic before any lesson plan exists: put the student on unseen questions from the level below and watch where the method collapses, treating the school's topic label as a hypothesis you still have to test.
- Teach the transition points that break students — model drawing into algebra around P6 and Sec 1, the E-Maths to A-Maths jump into trigonometric identities, partial fractions and calculus, and the JC step from pure technique into hypothesis testing and the normal distribution in H2 Paper 2 Section B.
- Work a returned prelim script with the student before touching new content: separate the marks lost to misread questions, to arithmetic slips, to working left unwritten, and to topics genuinely never learnt. Those four leaks call for four different plans in the weeks that follow.
- Run timed papers under real conditions, including the pacing each format forces: PSLE Paper 1 without a calculator against Paper 2 with one, and the longer structured papers at O-Level and JC where a single stalled question swallows the minutes three later questions needed.
- Mark to the exam's own scheme — method marks for stated working, non-exact answers to 3 significant figures or angles to 1 decimal place at O-Level, correct notation for calculus and vectors — so the student sees where each mark went.
- Build the presentation habits examiners reward: declaring the substitution, stating the domain, labelling the diagram, and finishing the applied question that closes E-Maths Paper 2 as well as the long structured questions at the end of H2 Paper 1, where the later parts carry the heavier marks.
- Report to parents in plain language: which topic was rebuilt, what the timed paper showed, what changes next week — and, in the crowded months, which topics you have decided to leave alone so the reachable marks get the hours.
Who tends to do well here
- Fluency in the Singapore syllabus you claim: bar-model heuristics and the AL bands at PSLE, 4052 and 4049 at O-Level, H1 or H2 at JC, and IB Maths AA or AI where you offer it.
- The ability to hold two representations of the same idea at once — a model drawing and an equation, a gradient function and the curve it came from — so a struggling student always has a second route in.
- Patience with arithmetic and sign errors, which are teachable patterns with a logic of their own; most repeated maths mistakes are procedural habits, and procedures can be retrained.
- Strong recent A-Level or degree-level mathematics, or real teaching experience with Singapore students. NIE training or MOE classroom experience is preferred and earns at the top of the band.
- Reliability with schedules and honest reporting to families, including telling a parent when progress is slower than they hoped.
Pay
Rates for maths tutors
S$35 – S$90 per hour
Where you sit in the band depends on the level you teach and your credentials. Lower primary model-method work sits near the base; JC H2 and IB Maths HL, along with NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers, sit at the upper end. Paid hourly in SGD, on schedule, with no cut taken from the lessons we match you to.
How it works
From application to your first lesson
- 01
Send us your maths range
Apply through the contact form on this site and tell us the exact span you can teach — primary heuristics only, E-Maths and A-Maths, H2, IB AA HL, or the full road from bar models to calculus.
- 02
We screen you and verify the syllabus you claim
Our team checks your background and confirms your subjects and teaching experience against the levels and papers you listed. Claiming both A-Maths and JC calculus means we verify both.
- 03
We match you to students by level and area
You are paired with students whose level fits what you actually teach and whose home fits your travel radius, or online if that suits you better. No hunting, no bidding.
- 04
First lesson: diagnose, then a rhythm
Most maths engagements open with a diagnostic hour — find where the understanding actually broke — and the weekly rhythm gets fixed after that first meeting. If a slot shifts or a parent conversation turns difficult, that lands on us, and you keep teaching.

What maths tutors ask us before applying
Do I have to take both E-Maths and A-Maths students?
No. Plenty of our tutors take 4052 only and say openly that 4049 trigonometric identities and calculus sit outside their range. We match against what you verify, so an accurate narrow profile brings you better-fitting students than an inflated wide one.
I only studied H2 Maths myself — can I take primary students?
Only if you are willing to learn the model method properly. Strong mathematicians often try to shortcut a P5 pupil straight into algebra, which leaves the child unable to present working a PSLE marker will accept. If you take primary assignments, you teach the heuristics the way the syllabus builds them.
How much of this job is marking?
More than new tutors expect, and much of the value sits there. A marked script carries information a conversation rarely surfaces: which questions were attempted last, where the working thins out, whether a loss was method or arithmetic. Reading one prelim paper properly often reshapes the next month of lessons.
Can I pick up a student in the crowded stretch before the written papers?
Yes, and it is a different assignment from one that starts at the top of the school year. Expect the first session to go on a returned script, expect to agree with the parent which topics you will leave alone, and expect most of your hours to go into pacing, presentation and the question types that are still reachable. We tell families plainly what a tutor joining at that point can work on.
Can I teach IB Maths AA and AI, or IGCSE?
Yes. A minority of Singapore families sit international tracks, and tutors who can handle AA HL calculus or AI statistics are in genuine demand. Tell us on the form and we will verify and match accordingly.
Are lessons one-to-one or in groups?
Both. One-to-one suits diagnostic rebuilding, where a gap belongs to one student alone; small groups work well for exam technique and timed practice, where students gain from seeing a peer set up the same problem differently. Late in a cycle, group timed practice earns its place because students pace each other.
Do you provide worksheets and past papers?
You bring your own teaching material and question banks, which is normal for experienced maths tutors and keeps you in control of how difficulty progresses. Our team handles matching, scheduling and payment so your preparation time goes into the maths.
