Economics Tutor — H1 and H2, Singapore
Teach the last third of the answer — the stretch where two students with identical diagrams end up bands apart.

A JC2 student walks in holding a marked Prelim script, and the diagnosis is already sitting on the page. The diagrams are drawn. The definitions are there. What the marker's pen keeps circling is the last third of each answer — the paragraph that was meant to weigh two effects and stopped at listing a third. Eduprime is hiring Economics tutors for H1 (8843) and H2 (9570) who can read that script beside the student, name the skill that went missing, and set the same question again until the judgement arrives inside the time limit. Two scripts can carry the same diagrams and the same theory and still land bands apart; evaluation is what sits between them. The job covers both papers — extract handling and data inference in the case studies, and a 25-mark essay that has to reach a stand while the clock runs.
Why tutors stay with this subject
- Your teaching gets checked in writing. You set a question, mark it, and see on the next attempt whether the repair held — few subjects hand a tutor that clear a record of their own effect.
- Most JC students arrive already knowing the content, so the ceiling is writing. The teaching turns into sentence work: which clause carries the judgement, which condition has to be stated, which assumption should be admitted out loud.
- You teach a framework that has to travel. Singapore runs an exchange-rate centred monetary framework at MAS, and a student owns it only once they can apply it to a question that never mentions Singapore.
- You set your own load and area, and hourly rates in SGD arrive on the agreed schedule. Tutors carrying NIE training, and ex-MOE teachers who read a mark scheme from the inside, are the ones we pay at the top of the band.
The role
What the teaching actually involves
- Train case-study technique on the H2 Paper 1 extracts and the H1 case studies: reading the data before the question, quoting an extract as evidence and then inferring from it, and answering only what a command word asks for.
- Build essay craft for H2 Paper 2 — planning a 25-mark answer under time, splitting a two-part question so part (b) is not a rerun of part (a), and putting a reasoned stand at the end instead of a summary.
- Drill the diagram-to-argument link so a diagram earns its marks: correct labelling, the shift explained by a mechanism, and the welfare or price-level consequence read off the diagram in words.
- Teach the micro spine properly — elasticity applied to real pricing decisions, market failure via externalities, public goods and information failure, and firm behaviour across market structures.
- Teach the macro spine — AD/AS, the macro aims and their trade-offs, and Singapore's policy mix of exchange-rate centred monetary policy alongside supply-side and fiscal measures in a small, very open economy.
- Give written feedback that names the missing skill — application, analysis, evaluation — rather than a mark alone, and re-test the same skill on the next question.
What a strong Economics application shows
- An economics-related degree, or strong A-Level H2 Economics of your own, plus current familiarity with how H1 (8843) and H2 (9570) papers are set and marked.
- Marking judgement you can defend on an unseen script: put a band on it, then name the two sentences that would have moved it up.
- Mechanism depth for the question behind the question. A student who asks why a weaker currency can worsen the trade balance before it helps deserves a chain of reasoning they can write down, and Singapore policy explained accurately — MAS runs an exchange-rate centred framework, and students who absorbed a US-style interest-rate account from online notes get corrected plainly.
- Honest handling of case-study data: percentage change, index numbers, simple elasticity inference, and the confidence to say where a table stops supporting the causal claim a student wants to make from it.
- Working habits that survive a JC timetable — consistent slots, prompt replies to families, straight reporting on where a student stands. NIE training or MOE teaching experience is preferred, and not required if your subject command and marking judgement are strong.
Pay
Rates
S$45 – S$110 per hour
Hourly, in SGD, released on the agreed schedule. An assignment is priced by what it demands of you: a JC1 student laying micro foundations sits lower in the band than a JC2 H2 caseload where every session arrives with essays waiting to be marked. Credentials move it as well — NIE training and MOE service put a tutor near the ceiling.
How it works
From application to the first marked script
- 01
Tell us which papers you take
Use the contact form on this site. Say whether you take H1, H2 or both, and name the topics you would happily be handed cold — market structures, market failure, macro policy, international trade.
- 02
We verify what you listed
Everything you declare — subjects, levels, teaching history, NIE training, MOE service — goes past our team first, before a student is put in front of you.
- 03
Your caseload follows the JC year
Early in the year the demand is JC1 micro foundations; by June it shifts to JC2 essay and case-study drilling, then promo and Prelim recovery. We build your caseload to the phase you handle best.
- 04
Fix the format and start
Home visit or online is the family's call and yours to accept; once the first lesson is fixed, recurring slots follow the same pattern, and our team handles any re-arrangement that comes up mid-term.

What Economics tutors want settled before applying
I am far stronger on one paper than the other. Does that rule me out?
No. Some tutors build essays best — planning a 25-mark answer, splitting a two-part question so part (b) earns marks of its own. Others are sharpest on extracts and data. Tell us which, and we match accordingly. H1 candidates sit case studies only, so tutors who prefer that work fit H1 assignments cleanly.
A student turns up with a marked Prelim script and wants the grade moved. Where do you expect me to start?
With the script. Find the parts that stalled at analysis, decide which assessment objective went missing, and set one fresh question that tests the same objective. A repair list of three named skills does more here than a march back through the whole syllabus, and it lets you tell the family plainly what has shifted and what still has not.
How much marking is expected, and is it paid?
Economics tuition without marked writing leaves grades where they are, so we expect you to set and mark essays or case-study parts. Rates are hourly for lesson time; most tutors fold the review of a marked script into the following session and keep the marking load proportionate to the hours they teach.
I took H1 myself. Can I be placed on H2?
Usually not on that alone. H2 (9570) adds the essay paper and a heavier evaluation demand, so we look for a degree background or A-Level H2 Economics, along with evidence that you can mark to the assessment objectives. H1 (8843) and JC1 assignments stay open to you.
Is Eduprime affiliated with MOE or SEAB?
No. Eduprime is an independent private tuition provider. We teach to the published SEAB syllabuses, and we claim no accreditation, endorsement or partnership from MOE or SEAB, nor do we guarantee grades.
