A-Level Tutor — Teach JC1 and JC2 in Singapore
Three H2 subjects peaking in the same stretch, an H1 General Paper underneath them, and papers that award method. Eduprime wants tutors who can carry that at H1 and H2 depth.

The A-Level run-in is shorter than a JC2 timetable makes it look. Prelims are sat, marked and handed back, and the national papers arrive while the disappointment is still fresh — a good share of the enquiries that reach us land inside that narrow gap. By then a candidate is holding three H2 subjects that peak in the same stretch, an H1 General Paper that quietly carries 10 rank points inside a 70-point University Admission Score, and a fourth content subject that only counts if it lifts the total. Eduprime places A-Level tutors into that window, and alongside JC1 students who still have a full year ahead of them and are discovering that O-Level study habits do not survive the jump in abstraction.
Why tutors hold on to a JC slot
- H2 is the last school syllabus that reaches into undergraduate territory, so the degree you did stays useful in the room. You explain the material at the level you learned it.
- JC students can name their own confusion. Two years of tutorials have trained them to ask precise questions, and a precise question makes an hour travel a long way.
- Scarcity works in your favour. A-Level subject combinations fan out so widely that one strong subject is enough to be placed; breadth is optional here.
- Rates run from S$50 to S$120 per hour, a band that reflects how few tutors can carry H2 content with confidence.
- NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred for JC placements and are positioned in the upper part of that band.
- The commitment can stay small and clean. Many JC families want one subject in one fixed weekly slot, which sits easily beside other work.
- You are paid hourly in SGD on schedule, every cycle. Late payment counts as our failure, and the payout cycle is run on that basis.
The role
Inside an Eduprime A-Level tutorial
- Teach at the H1 or H2 level your student is actually offering, and know the difference — the H1 syllabus is a genuine subset with its own paper structure, and coaching it as a diluted H2 wastes everyone's time.
- Drill structured answers and evaluation, especially in essay-marked subjects where a candidate who knows the content still loses marks on argument shape.
- Run past-year papers timed to the minute. Exam-hall pacing is a trainable skill and most JC students have never had it trained.
- Insist on shown method. A-Level markers award working, and students who compress steps in their head bleed marks they had earned.
- Triage honestly with JC2 students in the final months — decide with them which topics get consolidated and which get accepted as losses.
- Report progress to the family in plain language, so parents can see what changed between one month and the next.
What a JC placement asks of you
- Command of the material at the level you claim. We assess H1 and H2 separately, because a tutor who is fluent at H1 can still be exposed by an H2 question, and JC students locate the edge of your knowledge fast.
- The habit of teaching from the student's own script. Most JC2 candidates arrive with marked prelim papers, and the quickest honest read of a candidate is what the marker took marks off for.
- Working knowledge of how the University Admission Score is assembled: three H2 subjects with H1 General Paper, rebased to a maximum of 70, and the fourth content subject and Mother Tongue counted only where they raise the total. Advice about priorities is worthless when the arithmetic behind it is wrong.
- Accurate answers about Project Work. It is Pass/Fail, it sits outside the UAS, and a student still has to pass it to qualify — three facts that families frequently blur together.
- Comfort with a student whose attention is split three ways. Three H2 subjects peak together, and a tutor who plans as though their subject is the only one on the table loses the student's week.
- Reliability against a compressed calendar. A session dropped during the run-in has nowhere to move to, and a JC family builds the week around the ones they have.
- Patience with the JC1 transition. The step up in abstraction from O-Level is the most common reason a strong O-Level student stalls in their first JC year.
Pay
Your hourly rate
S$50 – S$120 per hour
Where you land inside that band depends on the subject, whether you are teaching at H1 or H2, your track record with A-Level candidates, and your credentials. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers sit at the upper end. Payment is hourly in SGD and made reliably — we treat late payment as a failure on our side.
How it works
From application to your first JC tutorial
- 01
Send us your details
Apply through the contact form on this site. Tell us your subjects and whether you are comfortable at H1, H2, or both — that distinction shapes everything downstream.
- 02
We check and verify
Our team screens your background and verifies the subjects and teaching experience you have listed. A-Level placements get closer scrutiny than lower levels, because the content demands it.
- 03
We match you to a student
You are matched by subject and by area, so the JC1 Physics student you take on is one you can genuinely teach and can realistically travel to.
- 04
You agree terms and begin
You settle the schedule directly with the family and start teaching. Our team stays available through the placement if anything needs sorting out.

ViewQuestions
Questions we get from JC tutors
Can I take H1 only, or a single subject?
Yes. H1-only tutors are placed regularly, and General Paper on its own is a viable specialism — it carries 10 rank points inside the 70-point UAS, and science-stream candidates often park it as the subject they will fix later. Give us the exact subjects and levels you want and we match against that list alone.
I never sat the Singapore A-Levels. Does that rule me out?
No. Most of our A-Level tutors did sit them and it helps; a relevant degree with demonstrable command of the current H2 syllabus is the alternative we accept. Subject knowledge is verified either way, and the check is heavier at H2 than at any level below JC.
A student quotes a 90-point score a senior told them about. What do I say?
That the base is 70 now: three H2 subjects with H1 General Paper. The fourth content subject and Mother Tongue enter only where they improve the total, and Project Work sits outside the computation as a Pass/Fail requirement. Candidates who inherited notes and advice from an earlier cohort sometimes budget their effort against numbers that no longer apply.
A family wants to start after prelims. Is a short placement worth taking?
Often, and it is a different job from a year-long one. The work is triage — read the prelim script, pick the topics where marks are still recoverable, drill paper technique, and be straight with the family about how much a handful of sessions can move. Nobody at Eduprime promises a grade, and you should not either.
One-to-one or small groups?
One-to-one dominates at A-Level, because subject combinations rarely line up between two students. Small groups appear where a few candidates share both the subject and a free slot in the same week.
