Frequently asked
About N-Level in Singapore
What is the GCE N-Level in Singapore?
The N-Level is the end-of-Secondary-4 national exam for students on the Normal stream (now under Full Subject-Based Banding). N(A) and N(T) are graded separately and act as a gateway to Secondary 5 (O-Level), ITE or the Polytechnic Foundation Programme.
How is the N-Level different from the O-Level?
The N-Level is taken one year earlier than the O-Level by Normal-stream students, with slightly less demanding papers. Students who do well can progress to Secondary 5 and sit the O-Level; others go to ITE or skill-route programmes.
What subjects are tested at the N-Level?
Core subjects are English, Math, Mother Tongue and combined-format Science / Humanities. N(T) students take more skill-oriented papers like Computer Applications and Design & Technology alongside English and Math.
Can N-Level students still aim for JC?
Yes — by progressing to Secondary 5 and clearing the O-Level with a strong L1R5 aggregate, N-stream students can apply to Junior College, Polytechnic or Millennia Institute.
How early should N-Level tuition start?
Most students start in Secondary 3 to build subject mastery before the Year 4 exam. Targeted Math and English tuition is the most common starting point, with Science or Humanities added as needed.
