Why tutor while you study

Built for NUS students

The exam run-up asks for short, frequent sessions, and you live minutes from the estates asking

As year-end papers approach, families often want two shorter sessions a week in place of one long one. That request is only reasonable when travel is cheap for you. From Kent Ridge, Clementi, West Coast, Dover, Queenstown and Buona Vista are one bus ride or a stop or two on the Circle Line, so the extra weekly slot costs you commute you can absorb between classes.

The semester restart is the one real collision, and naming your ceiling early defuses it

The long vacation runs to August, and Semester 1 teaching picks up at the point where school students are pushing hardest toward their year-end papers. That is when tutors are most tempted to promise hours they will later claw back. Fix your ceiling in the first fortnight, once add-drop settles, and give us the number. A load you can hold until your student finishes their papers is worth more to a family than a large load you shed halfway.

Revision season is where a science or economics degree pays out

Between the last topic taught and the paper itself, what a student needs is someone who can read a marking scheme and explain why an answer earns the mark. NUS tutors carrying Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Economics at degree level sit close enough to the H2 papers to remember which questions were traps, and far enough past them to see the syllabus whole. The back half of the year calls for exactly that combination.

Your quiet December is the family's planning month

Reading week in mid-November and examinations into early December mean your own load peaks after MOE schools have closed their year-end papers, so demand thins by itself. What follows is the year-end break, when families decide who teaches their child next year. A tutor who closed the year cleanly and had one honest conversation in December stands in a strong position to carry the same student into the new one.

Questions

Tutoring as an NUS student — FAQ

The school year is already past halfway. Is it too late to take on a new student?

Mid-year starts are normal, and what changes is the brief. A student who joins now wants repair on specific topics, so make the first lesson diagnostic: ask for their last two papers, re-mark them together, and agree on three things to fix. What we ask in return is that you commit to the stretch that ends with their year-end papers. Picking up a student in the second half and stepping away before the exam is the one pattern we work hard to avoid.

My reading week and examinations land in November. What happens to my students then?

Most of them are finishing at the same time, which makes the collision smaller than it looks. Set the last lesson date with the family at the start so nobody is caught out. Where a student still has papers left after your teaching stops, say so early: a family told a month ahead can plan, a family told in the same week cannot. Short online sessions during your own revision weeks are an option if you want continuity without the travel.

I move between hall and home depending on the semester. Does that break in-person assignments?

It shapes them. During term, hall and the UTown residential colleges put you on the internal shuttle to Kent Ridge MRT and the Circle Line, which reaches Buona Vista, Holland Village and Botanic Gardens with no transfer, so west and central students are easy on a weeknight. Over the long vacation, if you go home to the east or north-east, tell us the address you will actually be sleeping at. We can move you online for that block or look for students near home. The one thing we cannot do is hold a Clementi slot for a tutor who has left Kent Ridge for three months.

I am based at Bukit Timah Campus, or on clinical postings at NUH. Does the west focus still apply to me?

Bukit Timah Campus sits beside Bukit Timah, Sixth Avenue and the Newton fringe, one of the densest tuition catchments in the country, so you can build a full teaching week without going down to Kent Ridge at all. Rotations are the awkward part, because the roster shifts week to week and the back half of the year rarely eases off. There, one protected Saturday student or a fully online arrangement works best, agreed as a fixed hour that survives whatever the roster does.

I am in Year 2 and the A-Level papers feel far behind me. What can I teach during revision season?

More than you assume, and here a narrow accurate claim beats a broad vague one. NUS tutors commonly take H1 and H2 Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics, the O-Level, IB or IGCSE version of papers they sat, and Primary or Secondary subjects inside their field. In the back half of the year the ask is usually past-paper work in a single subject, so a precise claim gets you matched faster. Say which papers you sat and which modules you have cleared, and we match on that. Going back over an H2 syllabus you did well in costs you one evening; a subject you never sat stays off your list.
