A physics year ends twice. The practical is examined on its own schedule and is usually behind a candidate before the theory papers begin, which opens an odd window: the callipers go back in the drawer, measurement starts to feel finished, and then a data question turns up inside a theory paper asking for exactly the judgement the student has stopped practising. The same stretch compresses H2 derivations built across a whole term into an evening of re-reading, and re-reading a derivation and producing it on blank paper are two different skills. Eduprime is hiring Physics tutors for O-Level 6091 and A-Level H1 8867 or H2 9478 to teach inside that window — carrying measurement judgement past the practical, sending candidates back to blank paper for their derivations, and holding definitions to exam wording while everything else is being skimmed. A marked prelim script settles which of the three a student is actually missing.

The parts of this work that make it worth doing

  • A physics mistake has an address. 'Weak in physics' says nothing; a student who believes the normal force is the reaction pair to weight, or that current is used up on its way round a loop, is holding one specific idea you can name and then take apart. Diagnosis is most of the craft here, and it makes the next lesson concrete.
  • Measurement judgement is orphaned teaching. Once the practical is behind them, hardly anyone keeps drilling uncertainty, significant figures that survive four steps of arithmetic, or what a line of best fit is entitled to claim — while data questions inside the theory papers go on asking. Tutors who carry that skill past the practical are scarce, and assignments find them.
  • Secondary 3 is where the habits set. Sign conventions, free-body diagrams and the discipline of naming the principle before touching the numbers are easy to install early and slow to repair in the O-Level 6091 year. Arrive early and you get to teach; arrive in the exam year and much of the hour goes on repair work.
  • H2 9478 rewards synthesis. Energy, fields, oscillations and quantum run on one accounting system, and a school timetable moving chapter by chapter can rarely stop to show it. In one-to-one work you can, and candidates notice the moment the gravitational and electric field expressions stop looking like two things to memorise separately.
  • Marking is where the teaching lands. Sitting with a candidate over their own prelim script — the working that earned method marks, the sentence that named no principle, the graph line dragged through the origin because it looked tidier — writes you a lesson plan no worksheet can.

The role

What the assignments actually ask of you

  • Have the practical ready before it arrives, since it is usually examined ahead of the theory papers: O-Level 6091 Paper 3 across its two 55-minute sections, and H2 9478 Paper 4 over 2 hours 30 minutes. That means callipers, the micrometer screw gauge, repeated timings and honest treatment of error while the theory syllabus is still being taught.
  • Keep measurement judgement running after the practical is done — uncertainty as the range a reading actually allows, significant figures that survive four steps of arithmetic, a gradient taken from the line the candidate drew. Data questions inside the theory papers ask for the same habits, and a student who has mentally closed that chapter pays for it a second time.
  • Send derivations back to blank paper. A candidate should be able to start from a stated principle, say out loud which assumption they are making, and arrive at the expression — kinematics at 6091, field and potential relationships and the energy stored in a capacitor at H2 — with the page shut.
  • Hold definitions to the syllabus's own wording — the newton, the volt, gravitational field strength, specific heat capacity, electromotive force — so a student states them the way an examiner reads them and stops paying for a paraphrase.
  • Find the belief behind the error before re-teaching. A missing arrow on a free-body diagram, a sign convention chosen halfway through the working, a circuit answer that assumes current is spent on its way round — each has a cause, and correcting only the arithmetic leaves the cause sitting there.
  • Mark full past-year and prelim scripts against the published scheme, including H2 9478 Paper 3 with its structured Section A and free-response Section B, and hand the candidate back the reason for every mark. Parents get the same honesty — what is secure now, what is still shaky, and no grade promised at either level.

Who tends to do well in this role

  • Strong command of the Singapore syllabus you are teaching: 6091 for secondary, H1 8867 or H2 9478 for JC. H2 tutors should be comfortable with fields, capacitance, electromagnetic induction and quantum physics, and confident with calculus-level reasoning where the syllabus expects it.
  • The patience to correct a definition ten times without irritation. Physics tutoring is repetition with precision, and a tutor who rushes past the wording leaves marks on the table.
  • Practical fluency — you have actually handled callipers, a micrometer screw gauge, springs, meters and pulleys, and can talk about uncertainty as a real thing rather than a formula to quote.
  • NIE-trained tutors and former MOE teachers are preferred and are matched at the upper end of the rate. Strong graduate tutors with a physics or engineering background and real tutoring experience are very welcome.

Pay

Rate and what moves it

S$40 – S$100 per hour

Hourly in SGD, paid on schedule. Think of the band as a ladder: undergraduate tutors taking secondary 6091 assignments start near S$40, full-time tutors carrying H2 9478 and practical-exam preparation occupy the middle rungs, and former MOE physics teachers with NIE training sit at S$90 – S$100. Every assignment states its rate before you accept it — nothing is renegotiated downward once you have started.

How it works

How a physics assignment reaches you

  1. 01

    Name the papers you carry

Apply through the contact form on this site. Say which papers you can take — 6091 on its own, or H1 8867 and H2 9478 as well — and state plainly whether you are set up for the practical and for marking full scripts.

  2. 02

    We verify what you listed

Our team checks your background and confirms the subjects and teaching experience you claim. Three things get read closely for physics: how you handle a definition, whether your working is laid out so method marks can be awarded, and what you do with a reading that carries uncertainty.

  3. 03

A student is matched to you

Matching runs on level and area. A JC candidate stuck on fields and quantum reaches someone who teaches that half of 9478; a Secondary 3 student still building free-body diagrams goes to a tutor pitching at their year.

  4. 04

Fix the timing with the family

Days, length and format are settled between you and the family — at home or online, one-to-one or in a small group. Physics often wants a longer block when a full paper is being marked together, so say what you can hold. Payment, rescheduling and anything else that needs sorting goes through our team.

Questions

What tutors ask before taking a physics assignment

Do I need to teach the practical paper, or can I stay theory-only?

You can take theory-only assignments, but tutors who teach the practical get matched faster and at better rates. It carries 20% of the grade at both O-Level 6091 Paper 3 and H2 9478 Paper 4, and very few tutors offer it seriously, so demand consistently outruns supply.

The 2026 H2 syllabus moved Paper 4 data analysis onto spreadsheets. Am I expected to know that?

For H2 assignments, yes. Candidates now handle their analysis in spreadsheet software — importing the data, plotting with a trendline, extracting a gradient, estimating an area under a curve — so a tutor still teaching only pencil-and-graph-paper technique is preparing students for a paper that has changed. If you are strong on the physics and rusty on the software, say so and we will match you accordingly.

My student's practical is already over. What is left to teach?

A good deal. The judgement trained for the practical keeps earning marks in the theory papers — data tables, gradients, uncertainty, and the sentence that states what a graph actually supports — so a candidate who files it away as a finished chapter hands those marks back. After the practical the work usually turns to derivations from blank paper, definitions in exam wording, and full scripts marked against the scheme.

Can I take both O-Level and JC students?

Many of our physics tutors do, though the two peaks have different shapes. A 6091 candidate mainly needs precision — definitions in exam wording, structured answers, free-body diagrams that survive contact with a real question. An H2 candidate needs energy, fields and quantum held together as one framework, plus full scripts marked against the real scheme. Tell us honestly where you are stronger and we will weight your assignments that way.

I am an engineer, not a trained teacher. Is that a problem?

No. A physics or engineering background plus real tutoring experience is a strong profile, particularly for mechanics and electricity. What we do check is that you know the Singapore syllabus wording, because a technically correct answer phrased outside the mark scheme still costs the student marks. NIE-trained tutors and MOE ex-teachers are preferred and sit at the top of the rate band, though that is not the only path in.

Do I have to prepare my own materials?

You choose your own approach and materials, which most Physics tutors prefer — diagnosing what a particular student misunderstands about tension or circuit behaviour is yours to do. We handle the matching, scheduling support and payment so your time goes into teaching.

How flexible is the commitment?

This is flexible part-time contract work. You set how many hours you can carry and which parts of Singapore you can reach, or take online assignments only. Physics crowds up twice — the run-up to the practical, then the theory papers after it — with prelim scripts landing in between, which is the stretch where marking time matters more than teaching time. We will ask what you can realistically hold across both.
