Apply as a Tamil tutor- S$35 to S$85 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- East Singapore, in person

East Singapore's Tamil tutor jobs start at the dining table, where students in Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris want someone beside them who can turn the Tamil spoken at home into the Tamil that earns marks on paper. That means patient work on composition, on the grammar that everyday speech drops, on comprehension passages read closely, and on an oral where the student speaks at length with clear pronunciation. As a home Tamil tutor with Eduprime you sit with a single student in their own home, at the levels you choose, in the towns you can reach each week. The hourly figure for each lesson comes from the Tamil pay band printed further down. Getting started is a two-part process: send in the application form, then open your educator account on the page it leads to, and Tamil requests from east-side learners can reach you after that.
Teaching Tamil in the east
- At Tampines station the green East-West Line crosses the blue Downtown Line, so it is the simplest of the three towns to reach from elsewhere in the region. Mother Tongue tuition in Tamil, Malay and Chinese carries on there all year.
- The East-West Line runs from Bedok through Tampines to Pasir Ris with no change of train, which lets a tutor pair a Bedok lesson with a Pasir Ris one on a single evening.
- Bedok has two rail approaches: Bedok and Tanah Merah stations on the green line, and on the blue line, Bedok Reservoir and Bedok North. Say which side suits you and we match on that side.
- Pasir Ris station is currently the last stop heading east, one stop past Tampines, and blocks further out may need a bus connection.
- Tamil sessions usually land on weekday evenings after school or at weekends, and many students book extra ones in the run-up to the oral and written papers.
The role
What you will do
- Visit each student at home, whether an HDB flat or a landed house in Pasir Ris, Tampines or Bedok, on the agreed day every week.
- Shape each lesson around the exact paper ahead, whether that is PSLE or the Foundation paper, an O-Level or Higher Tamil paper, or an A-Level Tamil paper at JC.
- Build the written habits that home Tamil skips: planning an essay before writing it, choosing literary words over colloquial ones, and getting case markers and sandhi right.
- Take the student through the language-use section and the comprehension passages, drilling each question type until the method sticks.
- Run oral practice on reading aloud and extended conversation, and train listening comprehension with recordings the student meets for the first time.
- Mark the compositions and exercises set as homework before the next visit, with corrections the student can apply straight away.
- After every visit, a brief message on progress and next week's Tamil plan goes to the student, and to the parent who booked for a primary pupil.
What we look for
- Strong command of Tamil, both spoken and in the literary written style, since students are taught, assessed and examined in Tamil.
- Familiarity with how SEAB sets and marks Tamil papers at your chosen levels.
- Comfort switching between Tamil and English to explain a grammar point, depending on which language the student understands best.
- Eligibility for home tuition work in Singapore, which we check before your first Tamil lesson; the note on this page lists who qualifies.
- Availability you can keep week after week until the term ends, plus a dependable way of getting around the east.

Moving learners from spoken Tamil to the written Tamil their papers expect
Many of the learners you meet in Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris speak Tamil comfortably at home and with friends, yet freeze when a composition or comprehension answer has to be written in formal Tamil. The gap between the colloquial language and the literary register is the real subject of most lessons. A learner may say a verb ending one way at the dinner table and need a different, fuller form on paper, and until someone points this out the two keep blurring together.
Your job is to make that switch visible. A useful habit is to take a sentence the learner has just said aloud, write it down exactly, then rebuild it together in written form, naming each change: the verb ending, the case marker, the word order that sounds more natural in prose. After a few weeks learners start catching these shifts on their own, and their writing begins to sound like Tamil that belongs on an examination script.
Some students arrive from the other direction, reading well but hesitant to speak. For them the lesson leans on conversation: describing a picture, talking through a short video clip, giving an opinion on an everyday topic, with you gently recasting phrases they reach for and cannot quite finish.
Where marks slip in Tamil from Primary to JC, and how you work on each
At primary level the trouble spots are usually spelling and letter shapes. Learners confuse the three L sounds (ல, ள, ழ), the three N sounds (ந, ன, ண) and the two R sounds (ர, ற), and they miss or add a doubled consonant where two words meet. Short dictation, sorting words into sound families and reading aloud with a finger under each syllable do more here than long worksheets.
In secondary school the weight moves to composition, letter writing in formal and informal styles, and comprehension questions that ask for inference in the learner's own words. Students often know what they want to say but write in short, flat sentences. You can build their range by collecting connectives and set expressions in a personal notebook, then requiring two or three of them in each practice paragraph.
At JC level the work becomes closer to argument and summary. Learners need to plan an essay with a clear position, support it with examples drawn from Singapore life, and condense a passage without copying its sentences. Timed practice under realistic conditions, followed by a calm line-by-line review, is where most of the progress happens.
- Primary: sound confusion, consonant doubling, reading fluency
- Secondary: composition range, formal and informal letters, inference in own words
- JC: essay planning, summary without copying, timed writing
Building a weekly round of home lessons on the East-West and Downtown lines
The East-West Line runs through Bedok, Tampines and on to Pasir Ris, so a tutor based anywhere along the green line can reach all three towns without changing trains. Tampines is also served by the Downtown Line, which helps when your route starts near Bedok North or further into the city. More options come once the Cross Island Line opens; until then, plan around the lines that run today.
Travel stays light when Tamil lessons are grouped by town. You might take Tampines learners on two weekday evenings, Bedok on another, and keep Pasir Ris for a weekend morning, with feeder buses or a short walk covering the last stretch from the station. Primary learners tend to be free soon after school, while secondary and JC students often prefer later evening slots once their co-curricular activities end.
Every Tamil slot is your arrangement with the learner, so it is worth sketching your available hours by town before you accept new matches. A clear weekly grid keeps you from booking two homes on opposite ends of the region back to back.
How Tamil lessons change shape across the school year
Early in the year, lessons have room for foundations: vocabulary building, reading habits and fixing persistent spelling errors before the first school tests arrive. As weighted assessments approach (MOE has removed the mid-year paper for primary and secondary pupils), the balance tips towards past-style papers, timed compositions and targeted revision of the topics a learner found hardest in class.
Mother Tongue oral and listening components are usually held ahead of the written papers in the national examination season, so learners sitting those examinations benefit from extra speaking practice well before their written revision peaks. Building reading-aloud and conversation drills into each lesson during that stretch keeps the oral from being squeezed out.
School holidays bring a different rhythm. Some learners pause, while others use the break for a steadier block of lessons on reading and writing. Talking through these changes with each learner at the start of a term helps you plan your own hours across the year. If a learner later prefers a different tutor, Eduprime arranges a replacement for them free of charge, so each Tamil pairing stays a good fit on both sides.
Questions
Questions from Tamil tutors
Which levels of Tamil will I teach?
You choose. Requests range from primary pupils preparing for PSLE Tamil or the Foundation paper, to secondary students sitting O-Level Tamil, Higher Tamil or Tamil B, and on to junior college students taking H1 Tamil Language or H2 Tamil Language and Literature. Pick the levels you are sure of, and those are the only Tamil requests you will see.
Why does the role ask for fluent written Tamil?
The papers are set, answered and marked in Tamil, including composition in the formal literary register. A tutor has to write a model answer on the spot and correct a student's grammar accurately, so a strong written command sits at the heart of this role.
Must I be based in the east to take these lessons?
You need to reach the homes you accept each week. Plenty of tutors travel in from other parts of Singapore by MRT, so choose the towns that suit your journey and we keep matches within them.
How do Tamil requests get to me?
Each request tells us the level, the paper, the town and the lesson time the learner wants. We compare that with the educator profiles of our Tamil tutors, and when yours lines up, the request comes to you with enough detail to decide.
How much will I be paid?
Each lesson is paid at an hourly rate from the Tamil band printed on this page. The level taught and your teaching record decide where in the band you sit, and Eduprime confirms your rate with you before lesson one.
Is there online Tamil teaching too?
It is open to you. Some Singapore students choose online Tamil lessons, and as Eduprime's intake widens you may also be offered Tamil students living overseas. Every such offer rests on a learner requesting your level, so tick online in your profile if it interests you.
