Many Singapore students speak Tamil comfortably at the dinner table and then stall in front of a composition paper. Spoken Tamil and written Tamil are two layers of one language, and the papers are marked on the layer that is seldom spoken at home. What the lessons ask of you
- Read the student's actual syllabus before the first lesson. Foundation Tamil, Tamil 1157, Higher Tamil 1147, Tamil B 1152 and Literature in Tamil 2033 reward different things, and one lesson plan cannot serve all five.
- Teach composition as a craft — planning under time pressure, paragraph shape, and a working stock of formal vocabulary the student can reach for when the page is still empty.
- Work through language use and comprehension question by question, so the student learns why a wrong option is wrong.
- Rehearse the oral aloud every week: clean articulation, continuous spoken answers, and attention to the ழ / ள / ல and ண / ன / ந contrasts that mark a careful speaker.
- Run listening practice on passages the student has never heard, so the skill being trained is genuine listening.
- Mark written work between lessons and return corrections the student can act on — write the correct form out in full, so the page itself shows what a right answer looks like.
- For Literature in Tamil candidates, lead close reading of the set texts — imagery, argument, and the discipline of quoting accurately.
- Keep parents informed in plain terms, with a short record of what each lesson covered and what was set for the week.
What we check before matching you
- Accurate written Tamil in the formal register — you can produce a model answer at the level you claim, on the spot, without a dictionary at your elbow.
- The ability to explain Tamil grammar in the language your student thinks in. Many Singapore students take the explanation in English and do the practice in Tamil.
- Working knowledge of the SEAB paper your student sits, or the willingness to study it before you begin. Tell us the codes you are confident with — 1157, 1147, 1152, 2033, 8657, 9577, 8614 — and the ones you are not ready for.
- Legal right to work in Singapore and a weekly slot you can hold through a whole term.
- Either travel across the island, or a stable online setup with a way to write Tamil script live where the student can watch it being formed — tablet, visualiser or document camera.

How the rate is set
S$35 – S$85 per hour
Where an assignment lands in that band follows the level and the syllabus. A Primary Foundation Tamil hour sits near the lower end; an H2 Tamil Language and Literature 9577 hour sits near the top, with O-Level Tamil, Higher Tamil, Tamil B and Literature in Tamil in between. Lesson length, travel and your record with that particular paper move the figure as well. The rate is agreed before the first lesson and paid on the schedule set with you, in Singapore dollars.

Questions Tamil tutors ask us
Do I need a degree in Tamil to apply?
No. We ask for command of the formal written register and the ability to teach it, whatever route gave you that command. Current and former MOE Tamil teachers, NIE-trained language teachers, graduates of Tamil-medium education, and undergraduates who carried Higher Tamil through JC are all welcome to apply. What gets checked is whether you can model, correct and explain at the level you want to take.
Which syllabuses will I be asked to teach?
At primary level, Tamil (Standard) and Foundation Tamil for the PSLE, covering the composition paper, the language use and comprehension paper, the oral and the listening comprehension. At secondary level, Tamil 1157, Higher Tamil 1147, Tamil B 1152, Literature in Tamil 2033, and occasionally Humanities (Social Studies, Literature in Tamil) 2265. At JC level, H1 Tamil Language 8657, H2 Tamil Language and Literature 9577, Tamil B 8614, and now and then H3 Tamil Language and Literature 9941.
My student speaks Tamil at home and still fails composition. What is going on?
That gap is normal and it is structural. Household Tamil is a spoken variety with its own shortcuts; the examination is written in the literary register, with full case endings, formal verb forms and joins that speech smooths away. Fluency at home gives a student confidence and vocabulary, and the written forms still have to be taught deliberately. Plan for explicit teaching of the written system, and keep the student's spoken ease as the asset it is.
Is teaching Tamil B different from teaching mainstream Tamil?
Yes, in pacing and in weight. Tamil B carries its own codes — 1152 at O-Level, 8614 at A-Level — and the students on it usually need heavier scaffolding on reading, functional language and confidence before anything else. Running a Tamil B hour at mainstream speed leaves the student behind by the second month. Tutors who take these assignments plan smaller steps and more repetition.
What if the student's school does not run Tamil classes?
According to an MOE parliamentary reply in 2023, around 90% of secondary students taking Tamil study it in their own school. The rest attend one of 11 school-based Tamil centres, or Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre (UPTLC), the MOE centre that offers Tamil, Basic Tamil, Higher Tamil and Tamil B outside curriculum hours for students whose schools do not offer those programmes. Those families often want a tutor closer to home to hold the week together between centre sessions.
Can I take assignments online only?
Yes. Tamil learners are spread thinly across the whole island, so online lessons widen the pool of students you can reach and remove travel from your evening. We do ask how you will demonstrate script and correct handwriting on screen — a tablet, visualiser or document camera makes the difference between a lesson the student watches and a lesson the student follows.
Do I have to find my own students?

I have never taught Literature in Tamil. Should I still apply?
Apply, and be exact about your scope. Literature briefs go to tutors who are comfortable reading set texts closely and teaching students to quote and argue from them. Declaring what you do not take costs you nothing and keeps you away from an assignment that would go badly for both sides.
How much preparation is expected outside the lesson?
Enough to arrive with the hour planned and the previous week's written work marked. Composition and comprehension work generate marking, and that marking is where a Tamil student improves fastest, so the rate is set with that time in mind.
