Become a tutor with Eduprime Singapore

East Singapore's home Chinese tutor jobs put you beside students who mostly grow up speaking English at home, so their weekly Chinese lesson is often the one hour outside school when Mandarin is spoken to them, with them and about their own homework. Eduprime places Chinese tutors into those homes in Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris. The Mother Tongue year has its own rhythm: oral and listening come ahead of the written papers, so the early months are voice work, and the later months move to composition, comprehension and summary writing. You tell us the towns you can reach and the evenings you keep free, and we introduce you to students whose level and location suit you. If you would also like to teach online, say so in your application. Eduprime may then offer you online students in Singapore, and in time students from other countries too, whenever a learner asks for your level.

Teaching Chinese in the east

  • An evening that starts at a flat in Bedok can finish in Pasir Ris without changing trains, because the green East-West Line joins the region end to end with Tampines in the middle.
  • Bedok North and Bedok Reservoir also sit on the blue Downtown Line, which meets the green line at Tampines, so the northern side of Bedok is a direct ride from there.
  • Anglican High on Upper Changi Road is a SAP school, and together with Red Swastika it keeps Higher Chinese in demand around Bedok. Some pupils begin Higher Chinese lessons at P4 with a SAP secondary place in mind.
  • Chinese lessons here mostly fall on weekday evenings, and tutors often pair two slots in different towns on the same night. PSLE Chinese requests usually pick up once the P5 year-end results are out.
  • Pasir Ris is where the green line ends today. The Cross Island Line is planned to meet it there, which will bring the newer blocks north of the town within easier reach.

The role

What you will do

  • Hold a weekly one-to-one lesson in the student's home on the MOE Chinese Language or Higher Chinese syllabus.
  • Spend the first sessions finding out why marks slip: forgotten characters, thin compositions, slow comprehension or a student who goes quiet when asked to speak.
  • Coach 朗读 passages for tone and pacing, and practise the 会话 conversation on a video clip until the student answers in full sentences.
  • Grade 看图作文 at Primary and longer essays at Secondary using the MOE band descriptors, and show the student what would lift the next piece by one band.
  • Keep 默写 lists alive with spaced revisits so characters are still there at exam time.
  • Give the student a short, plain update on what has improved and what the coming weeks will target, and pass it to a parent as well when the learner is still in Primary school.

What we look for

  • Fluent Mandarin in speech and in simplified characters, with sound Hanyu Pinyin. The subject itself is taught and examined in Mandarin, and students learn their tones by imitating yours.
  • Comfortable English, because many east-side students think in English first and some new vocabulary lands better with an English bridge.
  • Proof of your own Chinese: an O-Level, A-Level or Higher Chinese certificate, university study in Chinese, or time spent teaching the subject to Primary or Secondary pupils.
  • Working knowledge of the current MOE Chinese exam format, or readiness to learn it before your first lesson.
  • Able to reach homes in Bedok, Tampines or Pasir Ris for evening lessons.

Questions

Questions from Chinese tutors

Do I need teaching experience to apply?

Experience is welcome and helps us offer you higher levels. Your own Chinese certificates or university study in Chinese are also a sound basis to apply, and you can start with the levels you feel most at home with.

Why is fluent Mandarin a requirement?

The subject is taught and examined in Mandarin, and a large share of the exam is spoken. Students pick up tones and rhythm by copying their tutor, so clear speech and accurate characters are the core of the job.

Which levels will I teach?

Primary to Secondary. In the east, much of the work comes from P5 and P6 pupils heading for the PSLE and from Sec 3 and 4 students heading for the O-Level, plus Higher Chinese for those who take it.

Can I keep my lessons to one or two towns?

Yes. Choose any of Bedok, Tampines and Pasir Ris when you apply, and we only put forward students in the towns you picked. Neighbouring towns on the green line make a two-lesson evening easy.

How is my hourly rate decided?

This page shows the pay range for the role. Higher Chinese work and upper levels sit towards the top of it, and your certificates and track record also count.

Can I also teach online?

Yes, if you want to. Some learners prefer lessons on screen, and Eduprime may offer you online students in Singapore and later from other countries. Every offer follows a learner asking for Chinese at your level.
