Apply as a Chinese tutor- S$35 to S$85 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun, in person at the student's home

North Singapore's home Chinese tutor jobs follow the young learners who have filled these estates over the past decade. Sembawang and the estates around Canberra MRT are full of pupils now moving through upper primary, Woodlands is the busy regional centre with schools packed around Woodlands Ring and Marsiling, and Yishun is the mature end of the belt, where Chongfu School runs the Special Assistance Plan track and Higher Chinese is a familiar choice for pupils. For many of these students Chinese is a language they meet mostly in the classroom, so the weekly lesson at home becomes the one hour where they actually speak it, read it aloud and write it with someone who cares how it sounds. We are looking for Chinese tutors who can be that hour: patient with a quiet child, precise about characters and tones, and clear about progress with each pupil and, for younger children, with the parent who booked.
Working in the north
- The three northern towns share one stretch of the North-South Line. Marsiling, Woodlands, Admiralty, Sembawang, Canberra, Yishun and Khatib follow each other stop by stop, which lets you teach in Woodlands after school and still make a Yishun booking later that night on the same train.
- Moving from a Woodlands flat to a Yishun flat usually eats half an hour or a little more once the walk from the station into the HDB block is counted. Two homes in two towns fit into one evening with ease, and a third booking is kinder to your timing when it sits in the town you are already in.
- The Thomson-East Coast Line stops at Woodlands North, Woodlands and Woodlands South, so tutors living near Bishan, Caldecott or Upper Thomson reach Woodlands in a single ride.
- Higher Chinese requests gather around Yishun and Khatib because of the SAP track at Chongfu School, while Sembawang and Woodlands lean toward Standard Chinese at primary level and Chinese writing enrichment for K2 to P3.
- Primary pupils here are usually booked for weekday evenings or weekends, with a parent at home during the lesson. When that parent works across the Causeway, the booking often moves to a weekend slot.
The role
What you will do
- Spend the first lessons finding the real leak in each student's marks, be it forgotten characters, listening that cannot keep up, or a child who freezes when asked to speak, and shape your weekly plan to close it.
- Rehearse 朗读 for tone and pacing and practise the video-stimulus conversation until the student can hold a full exchange.
- Run 默写 with spaced revisiting so characters stay learned well past the week they are tested.
- Grade 看图作文 for younger pupils and longer essays for older ones using the official marking bands, then walk the student through what would lift the piece one band higher.
- Build comprehension, 病句改正 and summary writing within the character limit for Secondary and Higher Chinese students.
- After each lesson, leave a short, plain update for the student, and for a younger pupil's parent or guardian, on what was covered and what to practise at home.
What we look for
- Fluent spoken and written Mandarin. Lessons are taught in Mandarin because Chinese Language is examined in Mandarin, from oral to composition, and the student needs to hear and copy the language as it is tested.
- A working grasp of simplified characters, Hanyu Pinyin and the current MOE Chinese Language syllabus at Primary and Secondary.
- Proof that you know the papers from the inside: strong school-exam grades in Chinese or Higher Chinese, study of Chinese at university, or past tutoring of local pupils.
- Enough English to explain a hard point to a child who thinks in English first, and to report progress clearly to the pupil and whoever booked the lessons.
- Regular weekday evening or weekend availability and a practical way to reach Woodlands, Sembawang or Yishun.

Questions
Questions from Chinese tutors
Is a teaching qualification required?
Classroom training helps, and plenty of good home tutors come from university or other careers. We weigh your Mandarin, your feel for how the school papers are set, and how calmly you handle a restless eight-year-old.
Why is Mandarin the teaching language?
Every component of the Chinese exam, from the spoken test to the essay, is sat in Mandarin, so the child needs a tutor who uses it naturally in front of them. A quick English aside can unlock a stuck idea for a pupil from an English-speaking home, and the aim is to need it less each month.
Which levels come up most in the north?
Standard Chinese at primary level is common across Sembawang and Woodlands, Higher Chinese requests gather around Yishun and Khatib, and early Chinese writing enrichment for K2 to P3 is a growing part of the mix as more young children arrive in the newer estates.
Do I get a say in which homes I go to?
Yes. Each request we pass on already fits your levels, commute and hours, and the decision to say yes stays with you. When your timetable shifts, update the towns and slots in your educator account and later offers follow.
Where do I fall in the pay range?
The rate range sits in the pay box on this page. Your point in it reflects the students' level and your results so far, and Higher Chinese lessons are placed near the top.
Could I teach students outside Singapore too?
Mark the online option on your profile and Singapore students who prefer a screen lesson can reach you as well. Our network also serves learners abroad who study the Singapore syllabus, and as that intake grows, Eduprime may offer you pupils from other countries. Every such offer rests on a learner asking for Chinese at the levels you teach.
