Apply as a Chinese tutor- S$35 to S$85 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- North-East Singapore, in person at the student's home

North-East Singapore sets a higher bar for home Chinese tutors than most of the island. Nan Chiau Primary and Nan Chiau High in Sengkang and Maris Stella High off Bartley Road are Special Assistance Plan schools, and the students who attend them expect a tutor who can take them through Higher Chinese composition and oral at full standard. A few stops up the North East Line, the young estates of Sengkang and Punggol ask for something different: patient lower-primary foundations in Standard Chinese for young learners who mostly speak English at home, and steady PSLE preparation as those learners reach Primary 5 and 6. Eduprime is recruiting home Chinese tutors for both. You teach one to one at the student's home, you decide which levels and towns you take on, and we put forward learners whose level and goals match what you offer.
Working in the North-East
- For Chinese lessons across the region, the purple North East Line does most of the work, with every town from Serangoon to Punggol Coast in one row. The Circle Line at Serangoon and the North-South Line at Ang Mo Kio bring in tutors from other parts of the island.
- Beyond the Sengkang and Punggol stations, LRT trains circle the estates, so a Higher Chinese lesson in Fernvale and a PSLE lesson in Rivervale can follow each other on a weekday evening.
- The region splits into two halves for Chinese. Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon and Hougang are mature towns where secondary Chinese and Higher Chinese exam work concentrates. Sengkang and Punggol have younger school rolls, so lower-primary Standard Chinese and PSLE Chinese lead there.
- In Hougang and Kovan, Chinese lessons usually fall between 3pm and 8pm on weekdays; Sengkang learners tend to book evenings and weekend mornings, especially in the weeks before the oral exam.
- A home base of two or three towns side by side, say Sengkang with Punggol or Serangoon with Hougang and Ang Mo Kio, keeps travel short and leaves room for an extra dictation session in one evening.
The role
What you will do
- Teach one-to-one Chinese lessons in person at the student's home, in the North-East towns you choose.
- Find out early where marks are being lost: character recall, vocabulary, listening, oral fluency or composition structure, and plan the term around it.
- Rehearse reading aloud and the video-stimulus conversation for the oral examination until the student speaks without long pauses.
- Build character memory through spaced 听写 and 默写 practice that is revisited in later weeks.
- Mark picture-based composition at Primary and longer essays and functional writing at Secondary against the MOE band descriptors, and explain each band to the student.
- Stretch Higher Chinese students on comprehension, summary writing and argumentative composition.
- Keep to the agreed lesson times, and after every few lessons give the student a plain account of how composition, oral and dictation are going, with a short note home when the learner is in primary school.
What we look for
- Fluent spoken and written Mandarin, including simplified characters and Hanyu Pinyin. This is required because every lesson, exercise and examination paper in this subject is conducted in Chinese.
- Working knowledge of the MOE Chinese syllabus at the levels you offer, from Primary to Secondary. Tutors offering Higher Chinese should have taken it or taught it.
- A good O-Level or A-Level Chinese result, a degree in Chinese Studies or Chinese Language Education, or proof that you have taught local students before.
- Enough English to explain a word or idea to a child who thinks in English first.
- Reliable timekeeping and willingness to travel by MRT and LRT between homes in the towns you pick.

Who can take home assignments
Home tuition in Singapore is open to Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and holders of a valid pass that allows this work. We check your eligibility before your first lesson. Serving MOE teachers need MOE approval before taking paid tuition. Lessons run at the learner's home or online, and online lessons are taught from Singapore.

Questions
Questions from Chinese tutors
Do I have to teach Higher Chinese?
No. You choose your levels. In Sengkang and Punggol, most requests are Standard Chinese at lower primary and PSLE level. Higher Chinese is most often requested in Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon and Hougang, and tutors who can teach it well are in short supply across the region.
Why is fluent Mandarin a requirement?
Chinese is taught, practised and examined in Mandarin with simplified characters. A student copies your pronunciation for the oral paper and relies on your written Chinese for composition models, so fluency in both is part of doing the job.
Which towns can I cover?
Pick from Hougang, Serangoon, Ang Mo Kio, Sengkang and Punggol, whichever you reach comfortably, and change the list later in your educator account.
How does Eduprime decide which Chinese students come to me?
We look at the level, the town and the lesson times each learner asks for, then put forward tutors whose profile fits. Every match is offered to you first, and you decide whether to accept it.
When are lessons usually held?
Mostly on weekday afternoons and evenings after school, with weekend slots popular in Sengkang and Punggol. Before the oral and written examinations, students often book extra sessions.
Can I also teach online?
Yes. Turn on online lessons in your profile and students anywhere in Singapore can be matched with you, and as intake grows Eduprime may add Chinese learners abroad who ask for your level.
What does my hourly pay depend on?
Pay is hourly within the band shown on this page. Where you sit in it depends on the level you teach, whether the student takes Higher Chinese, and your teaching record.
