Become a tutor with Eduprime Singapore

Biology tutor jobs in North-East Singapore exist because a student can know every Biology term and still lose the marks: the paper asks them to link a structure to its job, read a graph they have never seen, and draw a specimen to scale. Students across North-East Singapore come to Eduprime for tutors who can close that gap at the kitchen table. We are adding home Biology tutors for Ang Mo Kio, Hougang, Punggol, Sengkang and Serangoon. You teach one student at a time, in their home, at the level you are strongest in, and you decide which towns and time slots you offer. Your application here comes first, then your educator account; from there we propose students whose level, town and timetable match yours.

Teaching Biology in the North-East

  • Hougang, Buangkok and Sengkang are only a few stops apart on the purple North East Line, so a Sec 4 Biology lesson and a JC lesson in neighbouring towns fit into one evening.
  • If you live west of the region, the North-South Line station at Ang Mo Kio is the easy way in; Serangoon, where the Circle Line crosses, serves tutors coming from the east or the city fringe.
  • Sengkang and Punggol each have their own LRT loops that reach most housing precincts from the town-centre stations, which keeps travel inside the newer estates short.
  • Hougang lessons mostly fall in the after-school hours of weekdays, while Sengkang students lean on weekday nights and Saturdays, so a tutor free on Saturdays suits them best.
  • O-Level Pure Science requests come up often in Hougang, Sengkang and Serangoon. Punggol's lower secondary cohort asks for Sec 1 and 2 Science, and some Serangoon students follow IB or IGCSE.

The role

What you will do

  • Visit each student at home and teach Biology at the levels you have chosen to take on.
  • Start from the student's own marked tests and worksheets, and work out whether the lost marks come from content gaps, answer technique or time pressure.
  • Build structured answers that give one clear scoring point for each mark, linking structure to function and cause to effect.
  • Practise data and graph questions set in unfamiliar contexts, so the student learns to find the syllabus idea behind an unseen organism or experiment.
  • Rehearse practical skills under time: specimen drawings labelled and scaled, clean results tables, and method limitations that actually concern the method.
  • Set short practice between lessons, mark it against the real scheme, and after each block of lessons walk the student through a brief progress update, sharing it with their parent too when the student is a minor.

What we look for

  • A university degree, finished or in progress, in Biology, Biomedical Science, Life Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy or a close field.
  • Secure command of the syllabus you take on: O-Level Biology 6093, H2 Biology 9477, or the IB or IGCSE specification for students at international schools.
  • Confidence with lower secondary Science if you want students in Sec 1 and Sec 2, since that is where life-science topics first appear.
  • The patience to explain the same process three ways until one of them lands, and a calm manner with teenagers under exam pressure.
  • Reliable travel within the North-East and prompt, polite messages to each student, or to whoever booked for them, about schedules and changes.
  • NIE training or MOE teaching experience is worth mentioning; many exam-year Biology students ask for it.

Pay

Hourly rate for this role

S$40 to S$95 per hour

Where you sit in the band depends on the level you teach and the experience you bring. The rate is agreed before you accept an assignment and paid on schedule.

Who can take home assignments

Home tuition in Singapore is open to Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and holders of a valid pass that allows this work. We check your eligibility before your first lesson. Serving MOE teachers need MOE approval before taking paid tuition. Lessons run at the learner's home or online, and online lessons are taught from Singapore.

Where O-Level and A-Level Biology learners tend to lose marks

Biology looks like a memory subject from the outside, and a learner can treat it that way until a structured question asks them to apply an idea to a situation they have never seen. Most of your home lessons in Hougang, Sengkang or Ang Mo Kio will circle back to that gap. A student can recite the definition of osmosis and still stall when a question shows potato strips in three sugar solutions and asks why one strip grew longer. The fix is to have the student explain the movement of water in terms of water potential, step by step, until the reasoning comes out in full sentences.

Genetics is the second common trouble spot. Learners mix up genotype and phenotype, skip the gamete line in a cross, or write ratios without showing where they came from. At A-Level the load grows: dihybrid crosses, linkage, the chi-squared test and the logic of gene expression all ask for careful, ordered working. A good habit is to have the student draw every cross from parents to offspring at the table with you, then talk through which step a marker would look for.

Data-based questions and practical planning round out the list. Students often describe a graph when the question asks them to explain it, or name a variable without saying how it would be kept constant. For A-Level learners, longer free-response answers reward linked points about structure and function, so you will spend time showing how a strong answer moves from a fact to its consequence.

  • Water potential, diffusion and active transport explained through unfamiliar setups
  • Genetic crosses written out in full, from parental genotypes to ratio
  • Graph and table questions answered with description, explanation and units
  • Precise terms such as enzyme active site, denaturation and limiting factor used correctly

Shaping a Biology lesson around the term calendar

The school year gives Biology tutoring a clear shape. Early in the year, lessons usually follow what the learner is meeting in class: cells, transport, nutrition, then the bigger topics such as respiration, homeostasis and inheritance. You read the student's school notes and worksheets, find the parts that did not land, and rebuild them with diagrams and short spoken explanations before moving on to questions.

Secondary schools no longer set mid-year examinations, so around each weighted assessment and common test the focus moves to timed practice. You set a structured question, let the student answer under exam conditions, then mark it together against the key points a marker expects. Term three brings preliminary examinations for students sitting the national papers, and lessons turn into targeted revision of weak topics, past-paper style questions and the wording of answers.

Once the national examination season starts, sessions for candidates become short and specific: one topic, one paper section, a review of errors. School holidays are a natural moment to go back over content from the previous year, which matters in Biology because later topics build on cell structure and transport. When a student starts at a new level, the first few weeks with you often set the tone for the whole year.

Planning a weekly route across the North-East towns

Lessons take place in learners' homes, so a well-planned week saves you a lot of travel time. Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang and Punggol line up along the purple North-East Line, which makes it easy to place two afternoon lessons in neighbouring towns along the same line. In Sengkang and Punggol, the LRT East and West Loops carry you from the interchange to the estates, so it helps to check which loop serves a learner's block before you confirm a slot.

Ang Mo Kio has red-line stations, with Thomson-East Coast Line stops on its western fringe, and Serangoon connects the North-East Line with the Circle Line. If you already teach in the west of the region, Ang Mo Kio and Serangoon pair well on the same evening. If your base is further north-east, Sengkang and Punggol make a tidy cluster with short hops between them.

Because the North-East towns and hours you list are your call, and each Biology slot is fixed with the student, you can build a timetable that fits your own week. A workable pattern is to set aside fixed weekday evenings for secondary school learners after their co-curricular activities, and keep weekend mornings for junior college students who want longer sessions. Give yourself a buffer between lessons for peak-hour trains, and carry a small kit of printed questions and a diagram pad so that every lesson starts on time.

Questions

Questions from Biology tutors

Which Biology levels can I teach through this posting?

Lower secondary Science, O-Level Pure Biology, H1 and H2 Biology for junior college students, and IB or IGCSE Biology. You pick the levels that match your own strength, and we only propose students at those levels.

Do I have to cover all five towns?

No. Choose the towns you can reach comfortably. Plenty of Biology tutors start with a pair of stations close to home, such as Kovan and Hougang, and widen the list once their week fills.

How is the hourly rate set?

Biology pay follows the hourly band printed here. The student's level and your teaching record set your point in it, and it is agreed before the first lesson.

Do I need tutoring experience to apply?

It helps, especially with Sec 4 and JC 2 students in their exam year, though it is optional. We look first at your own Biology results and whether you explain clearly.

Could I add online Biology lessons too?

Yes. Tick online lessons on your profile and you become visible to Singapore students who prefer lessons by video. Over time the Eduprime network may open online students in other countries to you too, an opportunity that grows wherever learners ask for the Biology levels you teach.

How soon will I receive my first student?

That turns on how many North-East students request your Biology levels in the towns you picked. Tutors who keep evening and weekend slots open, and whose educator account is complete, are usually the first we can propose.
