Apply as a Biology tutor- S$40 to S$95 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- In person across West Singapore, in the learner's home

West Singapore's Biology tutor jobs centre on secondary and pre-university students. Most of the call comes from Sec 3 and 4 students taking O-Level Pure Biology, from JC students on H2, and, around Clementi, from IP and IB students whose courses run on their own track. As an Eduprime home tutor you teach these students where they revise, usually on a weekday evening or at the weekend, and you normally stay with the same student through the exam year so each lesson builds on the last. You choose the towns you can reach and the levels you are strong in. Each time a student nearby asks for Biology at one of those levels, the request reaches you with the details, and the choice to take it is yours. Tutors who join can also teach online, which is how the Eduprime network connects tutors with students elsewhere in Singapore and, as that intake grows, in other countries. Those online offers follow the learners who ask for your subject and level.
Working the west as a Biology tutor
- For O-Level and IP Biology on the green line, one westbound ride links Clementi with Jurong East and runs on to Boon Lay, so an early lesson near NUS High and a later one in Jurong West fit into the same evening.
- The red line serves Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak and Choa Chu Kang and crosses the green line at the Jurong East interchange. Going from a Clementi home to a Choa Chu Kang one costs roughly thirty minutes on the train before the walk, so Biology tutors usually give each evening to one line.
- Bukit Panjang runs on the Downtown Line, and its LRT loop through Petir, Senja, Jelapang, Segar and Fajar stops a short walk from most blocks. Sec 1 and 2 science is asked for often here as students move up from the town's primaries, which is where the biology strand of lower secondary science first gets serious.
- Tengah has no MRT station of its own yet. Buses from Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang serve it until the Jurong Region Line runs, and its secondary-age students currently attend schools in the neighbouring towns, which is where most Biology lessons for Tengah students begin.
- Lessons tend to fall on weekday evenings and on weekend mornings or afternoons, when secondary and JC students in the west's HDB towns are free after school and CCA to hold a regular slot.
The role
What you will do
- Teach Biology one-to-one or in a small group at the student's home, on a regular weekly slot agreed with the student.
- Start from the student's marked class tests and prelim scripts, sort the lost marks into gaps in content, answer technique and timing, and plan the next block of lessons around the biggest one.
- Build structured answers against the mark allocation, so a four-mark question gets four separate scoring points linking structure to function or cause to effect.
- Train practical skills on paper, since a living room has no lab bench: a biological drawing with a scale line, a results table set out cleanly, and a planning question answered to time.
- Rehearse unseen material, such as an unfamiliar organism or an awkward graph, until the student can name the syllabus idea behind it before writing.
- Give focused homework on the weak topic between visits, grade it against the actual mark scheme, and show the student how they are tracking toward the exam, copying in whoever registered them when the student is under 18.
What we look for
- A degree, or a degree in progress, in biology, life sciences, biomedical science, medicine, pharmacy or a closely related field.
- Working command of the course you will teach: O-Level Biology 6093, H2 Biology 9477, or an IP or IB Biology course.
- The ability to explain processes students find abstract, such as transport in plants, enzyme action, homeostasis and inheritance, in plain language and with a quick sketch.
- Reliable travel to at least part of the west by MRT, LRT or bus, and punctual, courteous conduct in every student's home.
- Tutors trained at NIE and ex-MOE Biology teachers bring useful classroom insight, and undergraduates with a firm grip of the syllabus are equally welcome to apply.

Inside a Biology lesson at a learner's home in the West
A home Biology lesson usually starts at the dining table with the learner's own school worksheets spread out. You look at what the class covered that week, pick out the one idea that did not land, and rebuild it from the ground up. For an O-Level student that might be how enzymes lose their shape when the temperature climbs. For an A-Level student it might be how a signal outside the cell switches on a response inside it.
Drawing carries a lot of the work. You sketch a nephron, a heart in section or a leaf cross-section, ask the learner to label it, then ask what would happen if one part stopped working. That move from naming to explaining is where marks are won, so you return to it every week.
The second half of the lesson tends to be written practice. You set a short structured question or a graph to interpret, let the learner answer in silence, then mark it together line by line, showing which words an examiner looks for and which phrasing loses the point. Before you leave, you agree what the learner will attempt on their own before the next session.
Where O-Level and A-Level Biology students lose marks, and how you help
Some Biology topics catch learners out again and again. Osmosis is a favourite: students know water moves, yet they mix up which way and why. At A-Level this grows into water potential, where you walk through each value step by step until the learner can predict the direction without guessing. Genetics is another. Students rush the genetic diagram, skip the gametes line and lose the cross. You train a fixed layout they use every single time.
Respiration and photosynthesis easily blur together, so you compare them side by side: where each happens, what goes in, what comes out. Data questions are the other big leak. Learners describe a trend without quoting figures from the graph, or explain when the question only asked them to describe. Teaching them to read the command word first fixes a surprising share of lost marks.
A-Level brings longer free-response answers on topics such as cell division, immunity and evolution. Here you help learners plan a few clear points before writing, link each one to the question, and use precise terms in place of everyday words.
- Read the command word before answering: describe, explain, suggest and compare each ask for something different.
- Quote values and units from graphs and tables.
- Keep one layout for every genetic cross.
- Use exact terms such as partially permeable membrane and active site.
A Biology week from Clementi to Choa Chu Kang
The West is spread out, so a good week starts with a map. Green-line trains run from Clementi to Jurong East and on to Boon Lay, which makes those towns easy to string together on one evening. Jurong East is also where the East-West Line meets the North-South Line, and the North-South Line carries you up through Bukit Batok to Choa Chu Kang.
Bukit Panjang is a Downtown Line town, and its LRT loops between Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang, so learners in those two towns pair well in the same afternoon. Tengah is newer, and for now you reach it by feeder bus from the Bukit Batok side. Once the Jurong Region Line, now being built, opens, Jurong West and Tengah gain more links.
Since you choose your own areas and hours, you can keep each day to one line. A Tuesday along the green line and a Thursday around the Bukit Panjang LRT cuts down transfers and leaves room to arrive early, settle in and start the lesson calm. You agree each slot directly with the learner, so you can build the route you want.
How the school year shapes your Biology lessons
Secondary students sit weighted assessments and class tests through each term, then end-of-year examinations. Lessons early in a term can move at a steady pace through new chapters. When a weighted assessment is near, you narrow the focus to the topics it covers and run timed questions.
For upper secondary students heading into O-Levels, the prelims are a key checkpoint. Their scripts show you exactly which topics still need work, and the weeks after prelims become targeted revision leading into the national examination season. JC students sit promotional examinations at the end of their first year and preliminary examinations in their second, so an A-Level learner's needs change sharply between those two points.
School holidays give a different rhythm. Learners have more time, so you can cover a weak topic in depth, work through a full past paper, or get ahead on the next chapter before school resumes.
Questions
Questions from Biology tutors
Which Biology levels are asked for in the west?
O-Level Pure Biology and the pure-science cluster are asked for all over the region. Lower secondary science support is strong around Bukit Panjang, Clementi adds IP and IB students, and JC students across the west take H2.
How do I teach the practical paper without a lab?
Most of what the practical paper marks can be trained at a desk: drawing from a photo or a simple specimen with a scale line, tabulating readings, spotting a limitation that concerns the method, and writing a plan to time. Bring printed practical scenarios and past questions, and time every attempt.
Can I teach IP or IB Biology?
Yes. Around Clementi and Dover, students on the NUS High diploma track, IP pathways and IB Diploma courses look for tutors who can teach beyond the O-Level syllabus. Tell us which of these courses you know well when you apply.
I study at NTU or NUS. Can I apply?
Yes, if you are reading biology or a related degree and know the syllabus you want to teach. Many west towns sit close to both campuses. Give us the hours you can offer in term and in the vacation so we only send you slots you can keep.
Must I take towns across the whole west?
You pick the towns that fit your commute. Some Biology tutors stay on the green-line side with Clementi, Jurong East and Boon Lay, others keep to the red-line towns further north, and Bukit Panjang is a short bus hop away.
Can I teach online as well?
Yes. Home tutors can opt in to online lessons once they join, and through Eduprime those lessons can reach students elsewhere in Singapore and, as intake grows, in other countries who ask for Biology.
