Apply as a Science tutor- S$35 to S$85 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- North-East Singapore, in person at the student's home

North-East Singapore's Science tutor jobs follow the young learners who fill its towns, many of them right in the Science years. In Sengkang and Punggol, P5 and P6 students work toward PSLE Science while a new wave of Sec 1 and Sec 2 students meets Lower Secondary Science for the first time. We are adding home Science tutors who can sit beside a student at the dining table, open the school file, and make one idea at a time clear enough for the student to explain it back in their own words. You pick the towns along the North East Line that suit you, and we match you with learners in those towns whose level and timing fit.
Teaching Science in the North-East
- Sengkang and Punggol are young towns, so the Science work there is mostly upper primary and lower secondary. In Punggol, Sec 1 and Sec 2 Science is one of the most requested bookings as each new cohort settles into secondary school.
- In the older estates of Ang Mo Kio, Hougang and Serangoon, Primary Science requests gather around P5 and P6 as students get ready for PSLE.
- The North East Line ties the region together from Serangoon to Punggol Coast, and the LRT rings at Sengkang and Punggol carry you on to the precincts without a bus.
- Tutors based elsewhere can switch at Serangoon from the Circle Line or ride the North-South Line to Ang Mo Kio.
- Lessons usually run on weekday afternoons and evenings after school, roughly 3pm to 8pm, and on weekends. Tutors who base themselves in two or three neighbouring towns keep their travel between lessons short.
The role
What you will do
- Teach Science one-to-one at the student's home, on the days and at the times agreed for each learner.
- Start each topic from what the school has set: the current worksheet, the latest class test and the chapter the class is on.
- Turn each idea into something the student can see, sketch or say aloud, then ask them to explain it back until the wording is theirs.
- Practise PSLE-style open-ended questions with P5 and P6 students, paying close attention to the keywords the marking looks for.
- Help Sec 1 and Sec 2 students settle into Lower Secondary Science, including lab-style questions, scientific terms and neat diagrams.
- Tell the student what was covered and what to practise before the next lesson; the parent who registered a primary pupil gets the same note, written for someone who was not in the room.
- Arrive on time, prepared, and keep lessons calm and focused in the student's home.
What we are looking for
- An A-Level certificate, polytechnic diploma or degree, with good results in Science subjects.
- Confidence across the biology, chemistry and physics content taught at primary and lower secondary level.
- Familiarity with the MOE Primary Science syllabus and the Lower Secondary Science syllabus, or the willingness to learn them quickly.
- Lessons, notes and progress updates all run in English, so clear spoken and written English is required.
- Availability for at least a few after-school or weekend slots in North-East towns you can reach easily.
- Patience with students aged about 9 to 14, and a steady, encouraging manner.

Who can take home assignments
Home tuition in Singapore is open to Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and holders of a valid pass that allows this work. We check your eligibility before your first lesson. Serving MOE teachers need MOE approval before taking paid tuition. Lessons run at the learner's home or online, and online lessons are taught from Singapore.

Where primary Science answers lose marks, and how you coach them back
Most primary learners know more Science than their scripts show. The marks slip away in the open-ended questions, where a correct idea is written loosely: a plant "needs sun" when the question wants light for photosynthesis to make food, or ice "turns cold" when the answer turns on heat being gained or lost. Much of your work in a home lesson is teaching a learner to name the concept, link it to what the question describes, and finish with the effect the examiner is looking for.
Experiment questions are the second sticking point. A learner reads a set-up with two beakers, a fan and a thermometer, and has to spot the one variable that changed, the ones kept the same, and why a reading was repeated. You can rehearse this with simple diagrams drawn on the spot, asking the learner to say aloud what makes the test fair before writing a word.
The themes themselves (diversity, cycles, systems, energy and interactions) reward a tutor who keeps returning to the same few big ideas, so a learner sees that the water cycle, the life cycle of a mosquito and the flow of energy in a food chain all follow patterns they can explain in their own clear sentences.
- Build a short personal list of precise keywords per topic with the learner
- Mark answers by asking which part of the question each sentence answers
- Turn every wrong answer into a one-line corrected version the learner writes
Lower Secondary Science: helping a student make the jump from primary
Secondary One and Two Science asks for a different kind of thinking. Students meet particles, cells under a microscope, forces, electrical circuits and chemical changes, and many of these ideas cannot be seen directly. A student who did well at primary level by remembering explanations can feel lost once a question asks them to reason from a model.
Your lessons help most when you make the invisible visible. Sketch particles in a solid, a liquid and a gas and ask the student to predict what heating does to each. Draw a circuit, then change one component and ask what happens to the current. Use a ruler and a measuring jug at the table to talk about units, precision and why a measurement is read at eye level.
Numbers enter the subject here too. Students start rearranging simple formulae, converting units and plotting graphs from a table of results, and they often lose marks on a missing unit or an axis drawn without a scale. A steady habit of checking units and labelling every graph pays off across the topics, and it prepares the student for the separate sciences that follow in upper secondary.
Planning a teaching week along the North-East Line and its LRT loops
Most Science lessons here hang off the North-East Line, which stops at Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang and Punggol, so a tutor who lives near any of these stations can often reach learners in several neighbouring towns with one train ride. At Sengkang and Punggol, the LRT East and West Loops carry you close to the blocks and estates the main line does not reach, which helps when you teach more than one lesson in a town on the same evening.
Ang Mo Kio has North-South Line stations, while Thomson-East Coast stations add another route across the region's western edge. Serangoon is an interchange with the Circle Line, which makes it a practical hinge if you are also teaching elsewhere in Singapore. The Cross Island Line will add further links when it opens, so it is worth keeping an eye on as your timetable grows.
When you set your areas and hours in your profile, think in clusters. Choosing towns along one line, or one town and its LRT loop, keeps travel time short between lessons and leaves energy for the teaching itself. Science slots are settled between you and each learner, so a cluster also makes it easier to offer slots that sit back to back after school hours.
How the school year shapes Science lessons in the North-East
Schools across these towns, Anderson Primary School, Xinmin Secondary School and Mayflower Secondary School among them, run on the same four-term rhythm across Singapore. Each term brings topic tests and weighted assessments, and the year closes with end-of-year examinations; mid-year examinations are no longer held at primary or secondary level. Your lessons follow that rhythm: new topics early in a term, practice papers and corrections as an examination approaches.
For Primary Six learners, the national examination season shapes most of the year, and Science shares the same evenings with every other subject being revised. A tutor who knows which themes a learner finds weakest can plan revision so each one gets a fair share of time before the papers arrive.
The June and year-end holidays are a useful window. With school lessons paused, a learner has room to revisit a topic that never quite settled, or a Secondary One student can preview particles and cells before meeting them in class. You can use this period to reset routines, review old scripts with the learner, and set a clear plan for the next term together.
Questions
Questions from Science tutors
Which Science levels does this role cover?
Primary Science from P3, when the subject starts in school, through to P6 and PSLE, and Lower Secondary Science in Sec 1 and Sec 2. You choose the levels you are comfortable teaching.
Do I have to cover all of biology, chemistry and physics?
Yes. At these levels one Science subject draws on all three, so a single lesson can move from plant parts to magnets to changes of state. Upper secondary Pure Sciences sit in their own roles.
How is my hourly rate set?
Your rate falls within the hourly range shown on this page. Teaching qualifications, classroom experience and the level you teach move it toward the upper end.
Which towns can I choose?
You can choose from all five: Sengkang, Punggol, Hougang, Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio. Towns next to each other, like Punggol with Sengkang, let you fit two Science lessons into one evening.
How do students reach me after I join?
Each request for a Science tutor arrives with the student's level, town and preferred times, sent by the learner or by the parent registering a younger child. We match those requests with tutors whose profile fits and send you the ones that suit your towns and slots.
Can I teach online as well?
Yes. Once your account is active you can open your profile to online Science lessons too, which lets you teach Singapore students outside the North-East and, in time, online students in other countries who request Science at the stages you cover.
