Apply as a Biology tutor- S$40 to S$95 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- Woodlands, Yishun and Sembawang, at the student's home

North Singapore's Biology tutor jobs are open to tutors who can sit at a student's table at home and make the subject add up. Biology in upper secondary and JC rewards students who can explain a process in clear, ordered steps and read an unfamiliar graph calmly, and many students reach Sec 3 or JC 1 with the facts memorised and the explanations still loose. Your job is to close that gap, one student at a time, in homes across Woodlands, Yishun and Sembawang. You choose the levels you teach and the towns you can reach, and we offer you the students whose level and timetable fit.
Teaching Biology in the north
- A Biology tutor can cover all three towns from one railway: Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun are stops on the red North-South Line, so a Woodlands lesson after school and a Yishun lesson after dinner is a realistic evening.
- The Thomson-East Coast Line reaches Woodlands too, a quicker route for tutors who live near Caldecott or Upper Thomson.
- Yishun is home to Innova Junior College, so H2 Biology students in the region tend to live around Yishun and Khatib, and many JC students from Woodlands make the trip there as well.
- Secondary students across Woodlands and Yishun take Pure and Combined Sciences, which is where most O-Level Biology requests from the north come from.
- Most lessons run on weekday evenings. Students whose parents work across the Causeway often book weekend home lessons.
The role
What you will do
- Teach one-to-one Biology lessons at the student's home, at a weekly time you agree with the student.
- Begin with the student's most recent marked tests and prelims, and find where each Biology mark slipped away.
- Rebuild explanations of processes such as diffusion and osmosis, enzyme action, transport, homeostasis and inheritance into clear steps a marker can credit.
- Coach data-based and structured questions, including graphs and experiments the student has never seen.
- Prepare students for the practical paper with labelled drawings, results tables and planning questions done under time.
- Set short practice between lessons and mark it against the published scheme.
- Give each student, and whoever arranged the lessons, a plain account of progress and of what the next lessons will cover.
What we look for
- To teach O-Level, a strong H2 Biology result at A-Level; to teach H2, a degree, finished or ongoing, in life sciences, biology, biomedical science, pharmacy, medicine or a related field.
- Working knowledge of the O-Level 6093 or H2 9477 Biology syllabus at the levels you offer, including the practical components.
- Clear spoken English and the patience to explain one idea in more than one way.
- One weekly slot held for the whole term, with a dependable way to reach Woodlands, Yishun or Sembawang.
- Tutoring experience, NIE training or MOE teaching experience helps and is optional.

Tutor jobs by town in North Singapore
Building a week of biology lessons along the northern stretch of the North-South Line
Sembawang, Woodlands and Yishun sit close together on the North-South Line, so a tutor who takes several learners in the north can often chain lessons with a short ride between them. Brown-line Thomson-East Coast trains also stop in Woodlands, a second way in for tutors travelling up from the middle of the island. A practical approach is to pick one anchor town, then add a second lesson a stop or two up or down the line on the same evening.
When you agree lesson times with a learner, think about the walk from the station as well as the train. Some blocks in these towns are a feeder bus away from the MRT, and a few extra minutes on foot add up across a week. Asking the learner for the nearest bus stop or landmark before the first lesson saves you a hurried arrival.
Secondary and junior college students in the north usually finish school in the afternoon, then have co-curricular activities on certain days. Biology lessons fit best on weekday evenings and weekend mornings, because the learner arrives with the day's lesson still fresh and has time to sit down properly with diagrams and notes.
- Group lessons by line and direction to cut dead time
- Confirm the block, lift lobby and unit before the first visit
- Keep a small buffer between lessons for train delays
Where O-Level and A-Level biology learners lose marks, and how you fix it at the table
Most marks in biology go missing on wording. An O-Level student may understand osmosis perfectly well, then write that water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration, which mixes up water and solute. Part of your job is to train the exact phrasing examiners reward: water potential, partially permeable membrane, active site, complementary shape. You can do this by having the learner explain a process aloud, then write it, then compare it with how a marking scheme would phrase it.
Command words are the second trap. Describe asks for what the data shows, with figures quoted from the graph; explain asks for the biological reason. Learners who blur the two lose easy marks on data-based questions. Practise with short graph questions on enzyme activity, rate of photosynthesis or population change until the habit sticks.
At A-Level the weight shifts to linking ideas across topics. A question on a mutation may need protein structure, gene expression and natural selection in one answer. Concept maps help here, and so does timed essay practice where the learner plans the links before writing. Genetics crosses, cell signalling pathways and the details of respiration and photosynthesis reward patient, step-by-step drilling, with every stage written out in full.
Teaching practical skills in a living room with no laboratory
Biology examinations test practical skills on paper as well as at the bench, and a home lesson is a good place to sharpen the written side. You can work through planning questions together: naming the independent and dependent variables, listing what is kept constant, and choosing a sensible range and number of readings. Learners often skip the control or forget to repeat readings, and a few rounds of planning practice clear that up.
Results tables and graphs are the other half. Show the learner how to head columns with units, keep decimal places consistent, choose a scale that uses most of the grid and draw a smooth curve or straight line of best fit as the data demands. A learner can carry out the experiment well in school and still lose marks on the table that follows it.
For biological drawings, a printed micrograph or a clear photograph of a leaf section works well. Ask for clean single lines, correct proportions and labels with ruled lines that do not cross. Magnification calculations, with careful unit conversion between millimetres and micrometres, fit naturally into the same lesson.
Bring a small kit of your own: graph paper, a sharp pencil, a ruler and a set of past-style practical questions. It keeps each session hands-on even at a dining table.
How the school calendar shapes biology tutoring in the north
The year opens with new topics and the first round of school assessments, so early lessons usually focus on building understanding of fresh content such as cell structure, transport or biomolecules. This is the time to set good note-taking habits and check that the learner can draw and label the basic diagrams accurately.
With the mid-year paper gone from secondary schools, the first checks on the Biology covered so far are weighted assessments and common tests. In the weeks before each, lessons move toward mixed revision and timed questions. The June holidays give a useful break from school pace, and it suits a structured review of weaker chapters with you.
Upper secondary and second-year junior college students then head into preliminary examinations, followed by the national examinations later in the year. Lessons in this stretch are dense with past-style papers, error analysis and short targeted drills on topics that keep costing marks. Learners may ask to adjust lesson times around school-arranged revision sessions, and a flexible tutor makes this period much easier for everyone.
After the national papers, learners moving into a new level often start lessons over the year-end holidays to get ahead on the next syllabus. If you enjoy steady, long-term work, staying with one learner from the start of a level through to the examination gives you the clearest view of their progress.
Questions
Questions from Biology tutors
Which Biology students would I teach in the north?
O-Level Biology, as a pure science or within Combined Science, and A-Level H1 or H2 Biology. You pick your levels on the form, and only requests at those levels come to you.
Do I need to live in the north?
Living nearby helps with a weekly routine. Tutors from elsewhere on the North-South Line, or near the Thomson-East Coast Line, often reach Woodlands, Yishun and Sembawang in one ride.
When do lessons usually take place?
Most home lessons are on weekday evenings after school. Weekend slots are common too, particularly for students in households where someone works across the Causeway.
Can I teach two siblings in the same visit?
Yes, where the booking asks for it and both siblings are at levels you teach. The lesson length and arrangement are settled with whoever made the booking before you start.
Is teaching experience required?
Experience is welcome and optional. What matters most is a strong command of the syllabus you teach and the ability to explain it clearly to a teenager.
Can I also teach Biology online?
Yes. Once online teaching is on your account, Biology students from other parts of Singapore can be matched with you, and learners overseas may follow as Eduprime grows.
What happens after I apply?
Create your educator account to complete your profile. Once it is set up, we send you matching requests from northern students as they come in, and you decide which to accept.
