Apply as a Home English Tutor- S$35 to S$90 per hour
- Contract, flexible hours
- North Singapore (Woodlands, Sembawang, Yishun), in person

North Singapore's home English tutor jobs lean on the primary years, taught one-to-one at the kitchen table in Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun. Pupils in the Woodlands and Yishun primary catchments usually start with an English tutor from P4 and keep that tutor through PSLE, so the work leans heavily on composition, comprehension and the oral. Younger children in Sembawang, Canberra and Woodlands South bring phonics and early reading, and the secondary schools of Yishun and Woodlands keep O-Level English, especially oral practice, on the list. We are taking on English tutors for home lessons across this belt. You choose the levels and the evenings you can give, and once you have joined we offer you students in the north who fit those choices, as their requests reach us.
Working in the north
- An English tutor up here can hold a Woodlands P5 composition lesson after school and still reach a Yishun oral session later that evening, because Marsiling, Admiralty, Sembawang, Canberra and Khatib all lie along the same run of the North-South Line.
- If you live around Caldecott or Upper Thomson, the Thomson-East Coast Line brings you straight into Woodlands, where its stops at Woodlands North and Woodlands South put most of the town's homes within a short walk.
- Coming from Bishan, Newton or Orchard, Yishun and Khatib are a straight ride north with no change of line, which keeps weeknight secondary lessons in Yishun manageable for tutors based in the central belt.
- Primary lessons usually run on weeknight evenings after school and homework. When a primary pupil's parent works across the Causeway, as many in Woodlands do, the lesson often moves to a weekend when that parent is home.
- Primary pupils in Sembawang and Woodlands usually have their lesson at home with a parent nearby, which suits younger readers who are still building confidence with reading aloud.
The role
What you will do
- Teach lower primary children to decode and read aloud with growing fluency, and when a child is stuck on reading itself, say so in simple terms to the adult who registered them.
- Prepare upper primary students for PSLE English: composition, situational writing, comprehension and the oral.
- Mark every composition and situational writing piece as an examiner would, and pick out the two fixes that will lift the student's next attempt.
- Run spoken practice out loud before oral exams, covering reading aloud, pacing and turning a short reply into a reasoned answer with an example.
- Support secondary students on O-Level English Language, with timed practice on comprehension and summary.
- Help JC students in Woodlands and Yishun sharpen General Paper essays and comprehension where you are confident at that level.
- Keep a short note after each lesson, and send each student, plus whoever registered a younger pupil, a line on the progress made and the next step.
What we look for
- Accurate English, spoken and written, and the ability to show a student why a sentence fails and how to mend it.
- Familiarity with the MOE English syllabus for your levels, from early reading through PSLE English to O-Level English Language.
- A recognised qualification such as A-Levels, a polytechnic diploma or a degree, or a teaching record with local students you can talk us through. NIE training or MOE teaching experience is welcome.
- Reliable evening or weekend availability, and a commute you are comfortable with into Woodlands, Sembawang or Yishun.
- Patience with young readers and a calm, direct way of reporting progress to students and, for young children, to their parents.
- Eligibility to take paid home tuition in Singapore, which we check before your first lesson.

Questions
Questions from English tutors
Which levels of English are asked for most in the north?
Upper primary is the largest share, with pupils in Woodlands and Yishun typically starting English support from P4 and continuing through PSLE. Phonics and early reading are common among younger children in Sembawang and Woodlands South, and O-Level English oral practice is a regular request from Yishun secondary students.
Do I need to live in the north?
It helps to live on the North-South Line or the Thomson-East Coast Line. Tutors from Bishan, Newton, Orchard, Caldecott or Upper Thomson can reach Woodlands or Yishun in one ride, and you tell us which towns you are willing to travel to.
Who can take home lessons with Eduprime?
Home lessons are open to tutors who may lawfully take paid tuition in Singapore. The eligibility note on this page sets out who that covers, and we check it with you before your first lesson.
How are students matched to me?
Level, town and time slot decide the match. A northern student's English request goes to tutors whose chosen levels and open slots fit it, so a wider spread of levels and evenings gives you more chances to be matched.
Can I also teach online through Eduprime?
Online English lessons with Singapore students fit in the same educator account, and English learners in other countries may be offered to you later as Eduprime grows.
Do I bring my own materials?
Start with what the school sends home, worksheets and past papers, then bring your own writing prompts and oral practice cards. Lessons follow the MOE syllabus the student is sitting.
