Central Singapore is the ring of mature estates around the city core, and it asks for maths at every stage. Upper primary children in Toa Payoh, Bishan and Marine Parade prepare for the PSLE. Secondary students in Bukit Merah, Geylang, Kallang and Queenstown work through E-Maths and A-Maths. JC students in Bukit Timah, Bishan and Novena take on H2 Maths, and Integrated Programme students in the same towns learn from their school's own materials. Getting around Central for lessons
- Four MRT lines cross the region. For maths students in the Thomson corridor, the North-South Line reaches Toa Payoh, Braddell, Bishan, Novena and Newton; the Circle Line covers Caldecott, Botanic Gardens, Farrer Road and Buona Vista; the East-West Line serves Queenstown, Redhill, Tiong Bahru, Kallang and Aljunied; and the Thomson-East Coast Line runs from Mount Pleasant and Stevens down to Marine Parade.
- The lines cross at Bishan, Botanic Gardens, Newton and Paya Lebar, and most of the region can be reached without leaving the North-South, Circle or Thomson-East Coast lines, which keeps travel between homes short.
- Distances are short. A train from Toa Payoh to Novena usually takes about ten minutes, so two or three maths lessons in neighbouring towns fit into one evening.
- Since June 2024 the Thomson-East Coast Line has run through Tanjong Rhu, Tanjong Katong and Marine Parade, so tutors living around Novena or Bishan reach Marine Parade families by train without a bus transfer.
- Level mix shifts by town. Bukit Timah and Bishan lean towards IP and JC maths, while Queenstown, Bukit Merah, Geylang and Toa Payoh carry more primary and lower-secondary work. Tell us which end you prefer and we plan your matches around it.
The role
What you do in each lesson
- Teach maths one-to-one in the student's home, at a regular weekly time agreed with the family.
- Start with a short diagnostic that checks the topic one level below the questions the student gets wrong, so the gap is found at its source.
- Rebuild weak foundations first, from fractions and ratio behind PSLE problem sums to the algebra that A-Maths and H2 calculus stand on, then return to exam questions.
- Set timed practice under real exam conditions, including the PSLE paper taken without a calculator and full Paper 1 and Paper 2 sittings at O-Level and A-Level.
- Mark to the exam's own scheme and train the written working that earns method marks.
- For IP students, teach from the school's own worksheets and test papers so lessons follow what happens in class.
- Every few weeks, tell parents in plain words which topics are now secure and which still need work.
What we look for
- Solid command of the maths you offer, whether PSLE, secondary E-Maths and A-Maths, H1 or H2 Maths, or an IP school's own programme.
- A strong A-Level or degree result in mathematics or a related subject, or proven experience with local students.
- Experience with Integrated Programme materials is a plus for Bishan, Bukit Timah and Tanjong Rhu families. Mention it when you apply.
- Comfort marking against exam schemes, including method marks and answer presentation.
- Dependable travel to the Central towns you pick, and weekly lessons that start on time.
- Clear spoken English, and a steady manner with a student whose confidence in maths has been knocked.
Pay
Hourly rate for this role
S$35 to S$90 per hour
Where you sit in the band depends on the level you teach and the experience you bring. The rate is agreed before you accept an assignment and paid on schedule.
Who can take home assignments
Home tuition in Singapore is open to Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and holders of a valid pass that allows this work. We check your eligibility before your first lesson. Serving MOE teachers need MOE approval before taking paid tuition. Lessons run at the family's home or online, and online lessons are taught from Singapore.

Do I need to know the Integrated Programme syllabus?
It helps a great deal for families in Bishan, Bukit Timah and Tanjong Rhu. IP schools write their own curriculum and assessments, and those students skip the O-Level, so lessons follow the school's materials. If you have IP experience, say so in your application and we route those families to you.
Do I get to pick my towns?
Yes. You list the Central towns you are willing to reach, and only families there are put forward. Tutors often choose towns on their own MRT line so evenings stay efficient.
How is the hourly rate set?
Maths pay follows the hourly band printed here, with your rate set by your teaching level and qualifications and confirmed with you before the first lesson.
Do I need a teaching qualification?
A formal teaching qualification is welcome and is optional. Strong maths results, a clear grasp of the Singapore syllabus at your levels and a patient teaching style matter most. Teaching experience with Singapore students counts in your favour.
Could I teach some maths online too?
