Malay is the national language of Singapore and one of its four official languages, and many children grow up hearing it every day while still meeting the written paper as something unfamiliar. Why tutors keep Malay on their timetable
- One subject can fill a week. The Malay papers run from a Primary reader to H3 9921, so a tutor comfortable in both language and literature can hold a Monday-evening PSLE pupil, a Wednesday 1117 candidate and a Saturday-morning JC essay without teaching anything else.

The role
What the assignments ask of you
- Teach to the exact paper the student sits. Foundation Malay and Malay (Standard) at PSLE reward different things, and the same distance sits between 1148, Higher Malay 1117 and Malay B 1151. In secondary a student takes Malay at the G1, G2 or G3 level they are placed in, and the lesson has to meet them there.
- Build karangan technique — helping a student find something to say, plan it in Malay from the first line, and place peribahasa where they earn their keep.
- Drill comprehension and language use: close reading of the passage, the phrasing a question is actually asking for, and going through the student's own script with them line by line.
- Run listening comprehension practice at exam pace, since a recording gives nothing back when a student's attention slips.
- Grow spoken confidence — reading aloud until pronunciation and pacing settle, then getting the student to hold a view in Malay for longer than one sentence.
- Take set texts seriously for candidates in Literature in Malay 2032, H2 9576 or H3 9921, and for students who meet Malay literature inside Humanities 2264.
- Send a short note after each lesson — what moved, what stalled, what you will hit next — and tell us early when the pacing of an assignment needs to change.
What we look at before matching you
- Written Malay strong enough to model the register the papers ask for and to correct an essay line by line, imbuhan and sentence discipline included.
- Real familiarity with at least one track you name — PSLE Malay (Standard) or Foundation Malay, O-Level 1148, Higher Malay 1117 or Malay B 1151, Literature in Malay 2032, or A-Level 8656, 9576 and 8613. Claim the levels you can carry honestly and say no to the rest.
- Post-secondary study or above. Undergraduates, graduates, career tutors and former school teachers all sit on our roster, and what we assess is the Malay you can teach.
- The right to work in Singapore, and enough steadiness to keep a weekly slot through a full school term.
- Either the willingness to travel to the towns you nominate, or an online setup that lets a student watch your markings appear on their own writing while you talk.

The hourly rate, and what moves it
S$35 – S$85 per hour
Where an assignment lands inside that band follows the level, the paper and what you bring to it. A Primary reader building fluency sits nearer the floor; Higher Malay 1117, Literature in Malay set texts and H2 9576 preparation reach higher, because the reading behind the lesson takes hours of its own. Travel time and lesson length are part of the conversation before you accept. The figure is agreed with you first, written into the assignment, and paid on schedule — chasing payment is our job.

What Malay tutors ask us first
Do I need to have taken Higher Malay myself to teach 1117?
No. We match on what you can demonstrate now. A tutor who sat 1148, has read widely since and has prepared the demands of 1117 can carry it well, while a certificate on its own settles nothing. Tell us plainly which of the two you want in your assignments.
I teach language. Can I take Literature in Malay assignments too?
Yes, once you can work through a text with a student and defend a reading of it. We will ask which prose and poetry you are comfortable teaching, and set-text work goes to the tutors who name it. The same holds for students who meet Malay literature within Humanities 2264.
What is Malay B teaching like?
Malay B (1151 at O-Level, 8613 at A-Level) is a syllabus in its own right, with its own papers and its own pacing, and tutors plan for it differently from 1148. Say on the form whether you want these assignments, so nobody slots you in by accident.
Do I have to be MOE-trained or NIE-certified?
No, and Eduprime claims no MOE registration or approval for its tutors. Former school teachers, undergraduates and full-time private tutors all teach with us. An assignment is decided by the Malay you can show us in conversation and on paper.
How many students will I be given, and how soon?
That follows the levels you cover, the towns you can reach and the slots you keep open. Tutors who take both PSLE and secondary work on weekday evenings tend to be matched quickest. We will not name a number of assignments we cannot fill.
Can I teach online, in person, or both?
Any of the three. In-person assignments run islandwide and go to the towns you nominate; online lessons suit oral practice and marking writing on screen. Many tutors keep in-person slots near home and take online students for the rest of the week.
How is my hour paid?
The rate lands between S$35 and S$85 an hour, is fixed with you before the first lesson and is written into the assignment. Payment follows an agreed schedule; you never invoice the family or ask twice.
My spoken Malay is far stronger than my written Malay. Is that a problem?
Say so on the form. Oral confidence and reading fluency are real assignments, and a tutor who speaks the language easily is worth a great deal to a student who freezes. Written work — karangan marking, imbuhan, exam register — goes to tutors who write at that standard. We place you where you are strong.
