IGCSE Tutor — Cambridge and Edexcel, Singapore
One caseload, two clocks — a student weeks away from a late-series paper, and a student who has just opened a two-year specification. Tiered entries, coursework where the specification still carries it, and arrivals from other school systems mid-course.

Eduprime is hiring IGCSE tutors for families on Singapore's international track. Look at what an IGCSE caseload holds in the back half of the year and the job explains itself: one student is a few weeks from a late-series paper, often re-taking a single subject to clear a grade bar the next programme has set; another has just opened a two-year specification with the whole of it still ahead. Same qualification, one tutor, two clocks that share nothing. Between those two students sits the entry the school files with the board, because the tier recorded at that moment — Core or Extended with Cambridge, Foundation or Higher where Pearson Edexcel tiers a paper — decides the ceiling every later lesson works under. We match on the board you genuinely know and on the reading you can do: where a student stands against the published specification, what a mark converts to, and which gaps a mid-course move between school systems has left behind.
Why tutors take this line of work
- An IGCSE grade is a gate, and everyone in the room knows it. Many international schools set their own bars for carrying a subject into IB Diploma Higher Level or A-Level, so work on a chemistry paper decides whether the student is allowed to keep doing chemistry at all. Few tuition jobs let you see the consequence that plainly.
- The specification is published, and so are the assessment objectives and the grade thresholds. Most of what tutors elsewhere guess about examiner preference is already written down — this job pays you to read it properly and turn it into lessons.
- Retake briefs are short, defined and unusually satisfying. A student re-entering one subject knows exactly which paper beat them, and your remit is narrow and honest: lift that single result.
- Paid hourly in Singapore dollars at a rate agreed before your first session, on schedule, with no deductions you were not told about.
The role
The teaching itself
- Confirm the student's board and syllabus code at the outset, and teach to that specification — a generic subject outline will mislead you on weighting, on tiering, and on what the command words are worth.
- Coach students through Core versus Extended entry on Cambridge subjects, and Foundation versus Higher where Edexcel tiers a paper, with the achievable grade range made plain to the student and family.
- Supervise and support coursework and internal assessment where the specification still carries it, respecting the school's authorship and moderation rules absolutely.
- Run past papers against published grade thresholds so a student knows what a mark actually converts to, and drill the command words the board's mark schemes reward.
- Diagnose and close curriculum gaps left by a mid-course transfer between school systems, and report those gaps plainly to the family.
- Track the student's entry series — Cambridge runs March, June and November sittings and Edexcel runs January and June — and plan the revision arc backwards from that date.
What the caseload asks of you
- Fluency in at least one board's specification for your subject — the document itself, its assessment objectives, and the places where Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel part company in your area.
- Real evidence in the subject: degree-level study, international-school teaching, or your own IGCSE and A-Level results, whichever honestly carries your authority.
- The ability to inherit a course in progress. Most of our matches begin part-way through, sometimes with the entry already filed and the tier already fixed, and the first job is to find out precisely where the student stands.
- A steady hand with retakes. A student sitting a paper again arrives with a result they resent, and the work goes better when that earlier grade is treated as information.
- Right to work in Singapore, plus the flexibility to teach in homes across the island or over video, around term dates and travel that expat families cannot move.
Pay
Rate
S$45 – S$110 per hour
Paid hourly in SGD, reliably. Where you sit in the band follows your subject, the tier you can teach to, and how much of the board's specification you carry without preparation. The shape of the assignment counts too: a compressed run into an imminent sitting demands more planning per teaching hour than a two-year arc, and coursework supervision brings its own reading load. Extended-tier sciences and mathematics sit toward the top. The rate is agreed before your first session. We promise families no grade, so nothing in your pay hangs on one.
How it works
How an IGCSE match gets made
- 01
Send us your subjects and boards
Apply through the contact form on this site. List the subjects you teach, whose specification you work from, the entry tiers you have taken students through, and whether you have handled a retake.
- 02
We read it and verify it
Someone on our team reads the application and checks what you have said about subjects and teaching history. International-curriculum experience gets looked at closely, so describe it exactly as it happened.
- 03
We match by board, subject and area
Board comes first — a student entered for Extended with one board needs a tutor who knows that spec, and the international-school catchments decide how far you travel. We put both ahead of raw availability.
- 04
First lesson inside the school's own term
International schools keep their own calendars, so the timetable is built around the student's term dates and entry tier. Once it holds, you teach; when a relocation or a tier change interrupts it, we re-arrange the slot.

ViewQuestions
Questions tutors ask us
Do I need to know both Cambridge and Edexcel?
No. Tell us which one you know and we match accordingly. Tutors fluent in both are useful to us because sibling groups and school transfers sometimes split across boards, but a deep single-board tutor is far more valuable than someone who half-knows two.
The entry is already filed and I think the tier is wrong. What now?
Write down what you are seeing — past-paper marks against published thresholds, which assessment objectives the student keeps missing — and give it to the family in a form the school can read. Changing a tier after entries are in belongs to the school and the board, carries administrative cost, and closes at some point in the run. Where it is genuinely too late, the brief changes shape: you coach the paper the student is actually sitting, and you say plainly what its ceiling is. Eduprime does not ask tutors to tell families what they want to hear.
Am I allowed to help with coursework?
You can teach the skills, discuss the specification's assessment criteria, and give feedback on drafts within what the school and board permit. You cannot write, dictate, or supply material that ends up submitted as the student's own work. Cambridge coursework is supervised and moderated, and a malpractice finding follows the student's whole entry — this is a hard line for us.
Is a single-subject retake worth taking on?
It is often the cleanest work we offer. The student has a result, a mark breakdown, and a reason to want a different one; the specification has not moved under them; and the remit is narrow enough that you can tell whether you shifted it. Retake students also carry the weight of having sat the paper once, so the first session usually goes to what happened in that exam room before any content gets taught.
What happens if my student relocates before the exam?
It happens on the international track more often than most tutors expect. Many continue online from the new country until the sitting; others stop. You are paid for the sessions you have taught, and we work with you on filling the slot.
Is this in-person or online?
Either. One-to-one or small group, at the family's home anywhere on the island or over video. Mixed arrangements are common: a family keeps the weekly session in person and adds online hours as a sitting approaches, when travel time is the first thing they want back.
