Become a tutor with Eduprime Singapore

History is examined in Singapore as a writing subject. Whether a Secondary student sits GCE O-Level History 2174 or the History elective inside Humanities (Social Studies, History) 2261, the paper asks them to work a source properly - infer from it, cross-reference it, weigh who wrote it and why - and then to build structured essays that carry an argument. Retelling the story earns little. At JC, H1 History 8838 and H2 History 9174 raise the altitude again: heavier reading, longer arguments, and a marker waiting for a judgement the candidate can actually defend. Eduprime matches History tutors with families across Singapore who need that skill taught lesson by lesson.

The case we put to History tutors

  • Your specialism is handled as one. The brief that reaches a family names the levels you take and the way you teach source work, so the match rests on the History you are genuinely strong in.
  • Two distinct fronts of demand, and you choose yours: Secondary students meeting source-based case study for the first time, and JC students writing H1 8838 or H2 9174 essays against a clock.
  • Rates run from S$35 to S$90 an hour, fixed with you before you accept an assignment and paid on the agreed schedule.
  • Part-time by design. You set the weekly load, the regions you will travel to, and whether a slot is in person or online.
  • How you teach the period stays yours - your own notes, your own source drills, your own marking shorthand. Eduprime handles the matching and the introduction to the family.

The role

The teaching brief

  • Run lessons against the syllabus the student actually sits: GCE O-Level History 2174, the History elective within Humanities (Social Studies, History) 2261, H1 History 8838, or H2 History 9174.
  • Teach source-based case study as a repeatable procedure - read the attribution line first, draw the inference, anchor it in the source itself, cross-reference against a second source, then answer the question that was set.
  • Drill essay architecture: a claim, evidence that belongs to that claim, explanation of how the evidence does its work, and a judgement that addresses the extent the question asks about.
  • Mark written work between lessons and hand it back with comments the student can act on - where the mark was lost, and what a stronger version of that paragraph looks like.
  • Build a revision spine the student can carry into the exam hall: a clean chronology, the causal chains that connect events, and a short bank of usable evidence per topic.
  • Rehearse timing. Knowing the content and getting it onto paper inside the time limit are two separate skills, and the second one has to be practised under conditions.
  • Give the family an honest read after each block of lessons, including the places where marks are still leaking.

What your record needs to show

  • A strong personal result in History at the level you intend to teach, or a degree built on sustained historical reading and argument - history, political science, sociology, law, area studies and the like.
  • Working familiarity with the current MOE/SEAB syllabus for that level, or the willingness to read it properly before your first lesson.
  • The ability to mark an essay and explain the mark. A tutor whose only comment is 'add more detail' will struggle to move a History grade.
  • The legal right to work in Singapore. Undergraduates, graduates, full-time private tutors, career changers, and NIE-trained or MOE-experienced teachers all apply through the same form.
  • Reliability with a schedule: arrive on time, keep the slot, and tell us early when something has to move.
  • For home tuition, willingness to travel within the regions you nominate. For online lessons, a stable connection and a way to annotate a source on screen while the student follows.

Pay

Rates, and when you are paid

S$35 - S$90 per hour

Where you sit in the band follows the level you teach, your track record with History papers, your credentials, and the lesson format. JC H2 work and tutors with a long history of marking essays sit towards the upper end; lower-secondary work sits nearer the floor. The rate is agreed with you before the assignment begins and paid on the agreed schedule, so you know your hourly figure before you meet the student.

How it works

How a History match comes together

  1. 01

    Send your application

Use the tutor contact form at /en/contact?intent=tutor. Name your History levels - 2174, the Humanities 2261 elective, H1 8838, H2 9174 - along with your weekly availability, the regions you can reach, and whether online slots suit you.

  2. 02

We read it and come back to you

We check your subject record against the levels you named and follow up on anything that needs clarifying: the periods you are strongest in, your experience marking written work, your earliest free slot.

  3. 03

A brief arrives and you decide

Each assignment reaches you with the level, the syllabus code, the schedule, the location or online setup, and the rate. Accept the ones that fit your week and decline the rest without penalty.

  4. 04

    First lesson, then a check-in

You meet the student, agree the plan for the block of lessons, and begin. We check in after the first few sessions to confirm the fit works for both sides.

Questions

Questions History applicants ask first

Which History syllabuses do the assignments cover?

Secondary work runs on GCE O-Level History 2174 and on the History elective sat within Humanities (Social Studies, History) 2261. JC work runs on H1 History 8838 and H2 History 9174. You tell us which of these you are willing to take, and matching stays inside that range.

Do I have to teach Social Studies as well?

Students on code 2261 sit Social Studies and History under a single subject, so some families ask one tutor to cover both halves. If you can take Social Studies too, say so in your application and it widens the assignments you see. If you prefer to stay with History alone, we match you to History-only work.

I have only taught O-Level History. Can I still apply?

Yes. You name the levels you teach and matching stays inside them. Taking Secondary assignments alone is a perfectly normal profile, and you can move up to H1 or H2 later, once you have read the JC syllabus properly and marked a stack of JC essays.

How much will I earn an hour?

Between S$35 and S$90. The level, your track record, your credentials, and the lesson format decide where you land in that band. The figure is fixed with you before the assignment starts.

Is marking done between lessons paid separately?

The hourly rate covers lesson time. History carries more written work than most subjects, so settle the marking load with the family at the start - how many essays a week, what turnaround - and quote a rate that accounts for it. Setting that expectation in the first lesson saves an awkward conversation in the third.

Are lessons in person or online?

Both exist. Home tuition assignments run islandwide and you nominate the regions you are willing to travel to. Online assignments suit tutors who can share and annotate a source on screen while the student follows. Running a mix of the two is open to you.

How many hours a week does this take?

As many as you accept. This is a part-time contract with no minimum roster. An undergraduate can hold two or three slots a week around lectures; a full-time private tutor can build a much wider timetable across levels.

Do I need NIE training or MOE school experience?

Neither is required. Both count in your favour, so list them if you have them, along with any relief teaching or marking experience. The decisive question for History is whether you can get a student handling a source confidently and defending a judgement in writing.

How do I apply, and what happens next?

Send the tutor contact form at /en/contact?intent=tutor with your History levels, your availability, and your preferred regions. We review it, come back with any questions, then send assignment briefs as they match your profile. Every brief carries the level, schedule, location and rate, so you decide with the full picture in front of you.

Ready when you are

Ready to take a History assignment?

Send us the levels you teach, your weekly availability, and the regions you can reach. We will match you with a Secondary or JC student whose paper needs exactly what you teach.
