Social Studies reaches nearly every student on the O-Level track, and almost none of them picked it. It arrives as the compulsory half of Combined Humanities — sitting with Geography under 2260, with History under 2261, or with Literature in English under 2262 — and it is examined through source-based responses and structured essays. That combination catches out students who have memorised their notes, because the paper asks what a given source can honestly support and whether a stand survives across several paragraphs. Why tutors keep a Humanities seat on their roster
- The demand comes from the timetable itself. A student placed on the Combined Humanities track sits Social Studies whether or not the subject appeals to them, so requests arrive right through Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, in every part of the island.
- The reasoning you teach travels. Attributing a source, weighing its provenance against its content, and building a paragraph that argues from evidence are moves your student reuses in the elective half, in later essay-based study, and in any course that asks for a defended position.
- You get to do real diagnosis. One grade covers both halves of the pairing, so your first task is finding where the marks are leaking — the source questions, the essay structure, or the elective subject sitting alongside. Families value a tutor who can tell them which.
- The craft itself is interesting. Coaching a teenager to construct a case from the evidence in front of them, and to argue a position they may personally disagree with, is teaching that stays with the student long after the certificate.
- The terms are plain: S$35 to S$85 an hour paid on the agreed schedule, a part-time contract, in-person islandwide or online, and assignments you accept or decline yourself.
The role
What a term of this teaching actually looks like
- Drill source-based technique through all of its moves — attribution, inference, comparison of two extracts, and judging usefulness or reliability from provenance and content together.
- Coach the structured essay: a stand declared early, paragraphs that carry evidence with explanation attached, and a conclusion that weighs the strongest counter-argument honestly.
- Know which pairing your student sits — 2260, 2261 or 2262 — and shape homework around what the elective half is demanding that term.
- Mark full written scripts in writing. A tutor who only talks an answer through leaves the student with nothing to copy the shape of on paper.
- Keep the room even-handed on social and civic material: teach the syllabus frame, build arguments from the sources, and leave your own political views outside the lesson.
- Run timed practice as the written papers approach, so the student has rehearsed the pacing well before the day itself.
- Send each family a short, plain update after a block of lessons, and keep attendance and lesson notes logged so the record stays checkable.
Who we can match, and what we check first
- A strong own result in Combined Humanities at O-Level, or degree-level study in a field that trains the same reasoning — history, geography, political science, sociology, public policy, law, or literature.
- Working familiarity with the current SEAB Humanities syllabuses (2260, 2261, 2262) and with the two things the paper demands: source-based responses and structured essays.
- The ability to write a full model answer on the spot, at the pace of the lesson, so the student watches the answer being built.
- Even-handed conduct on material that touches society, governance and identity. Teaching a student how to test an argument is the job; campaigning of any kind has no place in a family's home.
- Reliability with a schedule: arrive on time, give notice early when plans change, and finish the term you commit to.
- The right to work in Singapore, plus willingness to travel to a student's home or to teach over video.

S$35 – S$85 per hour
Where you land inside that band follows the level you teach, your own credentials and teaching record, and whether a session runs one-to-one or as a small group. The rate is agreed before your first lesson, and payment goes out on the schedule set at matching. Being chased for your own money is the complaint we work hardest to avoid.

Questions tutors ask before taking a Humanities assignment
Is Social Studies its own O-Level subject?
It is examined as the compulsory half of Combined Humanities. Students meet it in one of three pairings — 2260 with Geography, 2261 with History, or 2262 with Literature in English — and a single grade covers both halves.
Do I have to teach the elective half as well?
Plenty of tutors take the Social Studies half on its own and are matched on that basis. If you can also carry Geography, History or Literature in English, say so in your application — requests for a tutor who covers both halves come in regularly.
What does the paper actually ask students to do?
Two things. Source work asks them to infer, compare extracts, and judge what a source can support given who produced it and why. The structured essay asks for a position stated clearly and defended with evidence across the whole answer.
I studied sociology at university and never sat the Singapore O-Level. Can I apply?
Yes. Subject depth is a good starting point, and what we check is whether you have learnt what the SEAB paper rewards — an argument written in a university register can still miss the marks a school answer picks up. Expect to spend time with recent papers before your first lesson.
The subject touches politics. How am I expected to handle that?
Teach the syllabus frame and the evidence. Students are assessed on how well they reason from sources, so the useful lesson is how to build and test a case, including one the student personally disagrees with. Steering a student toward your own political conclusions falls outside the role.
Does this subject work online?
It does, and source work suits a shared screen well: tutor and student read the same extract, annotate it together, and the model answer is typed where the student can keep it. In-person assignments islandwide are equally available.
How many hours a week would I take on?
Most assignments run one or two sessions a week per student. You choose how many you accept, so the load can stay light around your own studies or grow when you want more.
When is demand heaviest?
It builds through Secondary 3 and climbs again in Secondary 4, as the written papers approach and students realise one grade is carrying two subjects at once.
How and when do I get paid?
Your rate is fixed before the first lesson, inside the published band, and payment follows the schedule agreed at matching. Log your lessons and the cycle looks after itself.
