Plenty of Singapore students can play a piece from memory and still lose marks the moment they are asked to describe what happens in bar nine. Academic Music asks three things of the same teenager at once: an ear that can name what it hears, a pen that can write about sound in exact language, and hands that hold up under assessment conditions. Eduprime is looking for musicians who can move between all three inside a single hour, and who understand that the code on a student's entry — 6085, 6086 or 9753 — decides how that hour should be spent. Assignments run one-to-one, islandwide or online, on a part-time contract paying S$30 to S$85 an hour.
What the work gives back
- Assignments are matched to what you actually play and analyse, so a pianist whose strength is harmony and a percussionist whose strength is metre end up with different students.
- Your rate is fixed before the first lesson and paid on time, every cycle.
- You set the load. Two weekday evenings, or one long weekend block — take what fits around your own practice, your gigs, or your degree.
- One-to-one buys the time a full class rarely has: forty minutes on the same four bars until the student hears the modulation for themselves.
- Teaching analysis sharpens your own ear. Explaining a cadence to a Sec 4 student sends you back into scores you thought you had finished with.
- You can work across the whole pathway — a Sec 3 student meeting formal analysis for the first time and a JC candidate carrying H2 Music 9753, in the same week.
The role
What an assignment actually involves
- Open with a diagnosis: establish whether the gap sits in the ear, in the written answer, in notation fluency, or on the instrument.
- Build listening work — score-following, then naming texture, metre, tonality and instrumentation from sound alone, then doing it again at speed.
- Teach the writing. Turn what the student heard into sentences that use the correct term, cite the correct bar, and answer the question that was actually set.
- Coach composition as a process the student owns: brief, sketch, draft, revision, clean notation, and the written commentary that travels with it.
- Prepare performance — practice planning, tempo discipline, memory work, and run-throughs under conditions close to the real assessment.
- Track which components the student is carrying that term and pace the lessons against their school and examination calendar.
- Leave short lesson notes so the family and Eduprime can see the shape of the progress without having to ask for it.
Who we can place
- Secure theory and aural skills — you read a full score, hear harmonic movement, and name intervals, chord quality, cadences and metre without hesitating.
- Working knowledge of the MOE academic pathway, or the discipline to prepare from the current SEAB syllabus document for the exact code your student is entered for: 6085, 6086 or 9753.
- Clear written English. Analysis is examined in prose, so you have to model a strong answer as well as diagnose a weak one.
- At least one instrument or voice you can demonstrate on, plus an audio setup that holds up over a screen share if you want online assignments.
- Eligibility to work in Singapore, reliable timekeeping, and the honesty to tell us which syllabus you can carry and which you would rather leave to someone else.
Pay
The rate, and what moves it
S$30 – S$85 per hour
Where you land inside the band follows the level (a Sec 3 theory-and-aural assignment and a JC H2 Music 9753 candidate are different jobs), whether the assignment carries practical coaching alongside the written paper, your track record with the syllabus, and travel when the lessons are in person. The figure is settled with you before the first lesson and paid on time. Once a term has started, the number stays where it was agreed.

Is this academic Music or instrument lessons?
This posting covers the MOE academic pathway — O-Level Music 6085, Higher Music 6086, and H2 Music 9753 at JC, where students are examined on listening and analysis, on creating their own music, and on performing. Graded instrument syllabuses from external examination boards sit outside this role.
Do I have to be a performer to apply?
You need at least one instrument or voice you can demonstrate on, because playing a phrase is often faster than describing it. Some assignments still lean heavily towards written analysis, and we tell you which kind you are being offered before you accept.
Which syllabus will I actually be teaching?
Whichever code sits on your student's entry. 6085, 6086 and 9753 are separate syllabuses, so ask for the code first and plan from that document. Memory of a cohort you taught three years ago is a poor substitute.
Can Music really be taught online?
Analysis, score work, aural drilling and composition coaching all travel well over a screen share. Playing together in real time runs into network delay, so tutors who teach online usually have the student record a take and then annotate it bar by bar in the following session.
How is my hourly rate decided?
Inside the S$30 to S$85 band, set against the level, the components in the assignment, the mode of delivery, and travel. It is agreed with you before the first lesson and paid on time.
Do I need my own instrument or a studio?
For in-person lessons the instrument in the room is usually the student's, so what you mainly bring is your ears and your scores. For online work, a stable connection and honest audio matter more than a large room — a laptop microphone flattens exactly the details you are trying to teach.
How far can I help with a student's composition?
As far as coaching reaches, and no further. Question a harmonic choice, push a revision, teach notation conventions, drill the commentary. The submitted work has to be the student's own; a tutor who writes it has quietly taken the subject away from them.
Can I take only JC students?
Yes. Tell us the ceiling and the floor you are comfortable with and we match inside it. Some tutors take H2 candidates only; others prefer Sec 3 and Sec 4, where listening habits are still being formed.
