What the assignment asks of you
- Move students from retelling a plot to analysing it — teach them to read diction, imagery, form and structure as choices a writer made.
- Rehearse the unseen response against the clock: annotate an unfamiliar passage or poem quickly, settle on a line of argument, and write it up inside the time available.
- Turn set texts into usable material — quotation banks organised by theme, character and technique, so evidence can be retrieved under exam pressure.
- Teach essay architecture: a thesis that answers the question actually asked, paragraphs that each move the argument forward, quotation embedded inside the sentence, and a conclusion that lands.
- Work across the three genres the syllabus tests — prose, poetry and drama — including what a play asks of a reader who only has the script in front of them.
- Mark written work with feedback that names the next move, and set a redraft the student can finish before the following lesson.
- Send the family a short, plain-language update after each block of lessons, and keep session records the way Eduprime asks.
Who we can place
- Command of Literature in English at or above the level you want to teach — an A-Level H2 pass, a degree in English Literature or a related humanities discipline, or classroom experience with the subject.
- Working knowledge of the SEAB syllabus you take on: O-Level Literature in English (2065), Humanities (Social Studies, Literature in English) (2262), H1 Literature in English (8841) or H2 Literature in English (9539).

Questions tutors ask before applying
Which syllabuses will I be asked to teach?
Assignments come from four: O-Level Literature in English (2065), the Humanities syllabus pairing Social Studies with Literature in English (2262), H1 Literature in English (8841) and H2 Literature in English (9539). You choose which of them you take.
Do I need to know this year's set texts before I apply?
No. Set texts differ from school to school and shift over time, and the student brings the titles with them. What we look for is your ability to read an unfamiliar work closely and build teachable analysis from it within the first week of an assignment.
Can I take unseen practice only, or one genre only?
Yes, as long as you say so up front. Poetry-and-unseen work alone is a workable scope, and so is a drama-heavy one. Briefs are matched to what you declare, so an honest limit earns you better-fitting assignments.
Do I need to be MOE-trained or NIE-certified?
There is no such requirement here. Serving and former school teachers are welcome to apply, and so are undergraduates, graduates and working professionals with a Literature background. How is my rate decided?

Does Literature teaching work online?
It works well, because the entire lesson lives on a shared text. Screen-sharing an annotated poem, building analysis in a live document and marking an essay while the student watches all translate cleanly. Home visits and online sessions can also be mixed across a single week.
What kind of student usually needs a Literature tutor?
Often a student who reads happily and writes essays that stay on the surface — plenty of plot, thin analysis, quotations dropped in and left uncommented. Others need speed for the unseen paper, or a way into drama after a term of finding the script hard going. Some arrive at the point of deciding whether to carry Literature to H2.
Is this full-time work?
No. Every engagement is a part-time contract built around the schedule you already have, most often weekday evenings and weekends. You can hold a single assignment or carry several at once.
How much marking is expected between lessons?
Enough that essays come back annotated with a clear next move, and the volume is agreed with the family before you start. A common arrangement is one timed essay a fortnight; a heavier marking load is reflected in the rate.
