You teach Primary through JC subjects within your own competence, from one room, to a student who could be at the other end of the island.
What a screen hands back to you

The role
What an online hour asks of you
- Open the call a few minutes early with the material already shared, so teaching begins in the first minute of the slot.
- Set the student's side up properly in session one: device, camera angle, headphones, and where their written working will live.
- Keep that working visible while it happens - a camera over the page, a tablet you both draw on, or the trained habit of narrating each line aloud.
- Annotate live on the shared screen: colour-code a comprehension passage, label a diagram, build a bar model one layer at a time.
- Cut the hour into shorter working blocks with frequent turn-taking, because attention has no tutor in the room to anchor it.
- Send practice sets, past-paper extracts and marked scripts as files ahead of the lesson, so nothing gets read aloud that belongs on the page.
- Mark work between lessons and return it with written comments the student can reread when you are no longer on screen.
- Write parents a short update at the end of each block of lessons: what was covered, what is still shaky, what to practise next.
- Agree a dropped-connection plan with the family in the first session, then follow it calmly on the day the line actually goes.

The band, and how the money moves
S$30 - S$85 per hour
Where you sit in the band follows the level and the depth of the subject: Primary work sits at the lower end, JC H2 and exam-year coaching at the upper, with secondary levels between them. Because no part of your evening goes into travelling, the whole paid hour is teaching. Payment is released on schedule each cycle, so nobody has to send a reminder to be paid. Engagements are part-time contracts taken assignment by assignment - you accept the slots that fit your calendar and decline the ones that do not.

Do I have to be in Singapore if all the lessons are online?
Yes. Applicants are based in Singapore. Lessons follow the SG school calendar and SG evening hours, and your students are sitting MOE and international papers here, so both the timing and the syllabus assume you are on local time and local ground.
What do I need on my desk before the first lesson?
A device with a working camera and microphone, headphones, a quiet room, and a home connection that carries an hour of live video steadily. For any subject taught through handwritten working, add a stylus tablet or a second camera pointed at your page.
Which software will I be teaching on?
Lessons run as a video call with screen-share. The particular tool is settled with the family before the first session, so stay comfortable with the common ones and test your camera, microphone and sharing permissions in advance.
How do I see a student's working when the paper is in their house?
You build that view deliberately. Three methods work: the student writes on a tablet you both share, a second camera sits over their page, or they narrate every line aloud as they write it. Settle on one in the first session and hold to it, because teaching without sight of the working is teaching blind.
Can practical subjects be taught this way?
Some parts cross the camera cleanly and some parts resist it. Experimental planning, observation-and-inference questions, data handling and the whole theory load teach well online. Hands-on apparatus work and physical corrections adapt poorly. Tell us which parts you can carry when you apply, so the matching is honest from the start.
How do you hold a Primary student's attention with no tutor in the room?
By changing the shape of the hour. Short working blocks, frequent turn-taking, silent stretches where the child solves while you watch, and a standing habit of asking them to talk their reasoning. For the first few sessions it helps to have a parent within earshot while the routine settles.
What happens when the connection drops halfway through?
Agree the fallback in session one: how long you both wait before reconnecting, whether the lesson continues by voice with the shared file open, and how lost minutes are made up. Note it in your lesson record and tell the family the same day.
