Principles of Accounts arrives late in a Singapore student's school life. A Sec 3 class opens the subject with no primary-school runway behind it: the entire vocabulary of debits, credits, accruals and carrying amounts lands inside a single year, and everyone in the room starts level. That makes the subject unusually responsive to precise teaching and unusually punishing of vague teaching. Eduprime matches tutors who can hold a ledger steady — people who know why a trial balance agrees, why an agreed trial balance can still be concealing an error of principle, and how to lay out a Statement of Financial Position so a marker can follow it line by line. Families ask for that help across the island and over video.
Why accounting people do well on this list
- The tuition market runs thick with Math and Science tutors and thin with people who can post a journal entry with confidence. If your training is in accountancy, audit or finance, yours is the scarce background here, and matching moves quickly because of it.
- Your students span the choice years and the exam years: Sec 3 beginners meeting the accounting equation, Sec 4 candidates drilling 7087 papers, and JC students working H2 9593 material at company scale. Take only the band you teach best.
- Progress shows itself in a way few subjects allow. A student who could not balance a trial balance in week one can hand you a clean set of statements by week eight, and both of you can see the improvement sitting there on the page.
- Working accountants, auditors and finance staff tutor with us on evening and weekend slots. The day job is the credential.
- You keep the lesson design, the pacing and the materials. Eduprime handles the matching, the family conversations and the payment run around your teaching.
The role
What the work looks like across a term
- Build the double-entry foundation properly: source documents, books of prime entry, ledger accounts, and the trial balance handled as a working check on the books.
- Take students through the adjustments that decide grades - accruals and prepayments, depreciation on the straight-line and reducing-balance methods, impairment loss on trade receivables, and inventory measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
- Drill presentation until it becomes automatic: correct statement headings, "as at" against "for the year ended", current and non-current classification, and workings labelled so an examiner can follow the trail.
- Teach the error types that survive an agreed trial balance - omission, principle, commission, original entry, reversal and compensating errors - together with the suspense account work that clears them.
- Move students from computation to comment: gross profit margin, return on capital employed, inventory turnover and the liquidity ratios, then the written judgement a business owner would actually draw from those figures.
- Mark timed practice honestly and return it with one specific instruction for the next attempt.
- Send Eduprime a short progress note each cycle so the family and our team read the same picture of the student.
What we check before matching you
- Command of the accounting cycle end to end, from source document to final statements, at the level you want to teach.
- For upper-secondary assignments, fluency with the O-Level Principles of Accounts syllabus (7087). For JC assignments, comfort with H2 Principles of Accounting (9593), including company-level statements and management-accounting questions.
- A degree, diploma or professional qualification in accountancy, finance, business or a closely related field, or a strong personal record in the subject supported by real teaching experience.
- Legal right to work in Singapore and the ability to hold a weekly slot for at least one full term.
- Layout discipline. You will be modelling statements on paper or a shared screen every lesson, and untidy presentation teaches untidy presentation.
- Patience for the first six weeks, when a beginner's every instinct about money runs the wrong way round a ledger.
Pay
Rates, and when the money reaches you
S$40 - S$95 per hour
Where you sit inside that band follows level, qualification and track record: H2 9593 work and exam-year 7087 coaching pay at the upper end, while introductory Sec 3 slots start lower. Payment runs on a fixed schedule once your lessons for the cycle are logged. Late payment and vanishing agencies are the two complaints tutors bring us most often, and our payment run is built around removing both.
How it works
From enquiry to your first ledger
- 01
Send your details
Apply through the Eduprime contact form. Tell us your accounting background, the syllabuses you can teach - 7087, 9593 or both - and the evenings or weekends you have free.
- 02
Screening conversation
We verify qualifications and ask how you would introduce the accounting equation to a Sec 3 student meeting it for the first time. That single answer tells us a great deal.
- 03
Matching
We put you in front of students whose level, location and timing line up with yours, drawing from an islandwide pool plus families who prefer online lessons. Every match is yours to accept or decline.
- 04
First lesson onward
Open with a diagnostic: hand the student a small set of transactions and watch exactly where the reasoning breaks. Everything you plan afterwards is built on what you saw.

Questions accounting tutors ask us
Which syllabuses will I be teaching?
Most assignments are O-Level Principles of Accounts, syllabus 7087. A smaller stream is JC-level H2 Principles of Accounting, syllabus 9593. You tell us which band you want, and matches arrive only in that band.
Do I need to be a qualified accountant?
No. We match accountancy and finance graduates, undergraduates with strong results in the subject, and working professionals from practice or industry. What we assess is whether you teach the cycle correctly and can defend your treatment of an adjustment.
Can I teach entirely online?
Yes. Accounting sits well on a shared screen, because the work is layout on a page and both of you watch the same statement being built line by line. Some tutors take online slots exclusively; others mix them with home lessons.
How much can I earn per hour?
Between S$40 and S$95, agreed per assignment according to level, credentials and experience. H2 9593 work and exam-year coaching sit toward the top of the range.
Is this employment or freelance work?
Part-time contract work on an assignment basis. You choose which matches to take and how many hours you carry in any given week.
When do I get paid?
On a fixed schedule once the cycle's lessons are logged. No chasing, no open-ended waiting, no invoices left hanging for months.
My students will be complete beginners. Is that harder work?
It is different work. Sec 3 students arrive with no earlier accounting to build on, so your opening weeks are pure foundation - the accounting equation, the two-sided rule, the books of prime entry. Tutors who enjoy building from bare ground tend to prefer these assignments.
Do I have to prepare my own materials?
You own the lesson design. Most of our tutors build from past-year papers plus their own worked sets of transactions, and nobody hands you a script to read out.
How do I apply?
Use the Eduprime contact form and mark your enquiry as a tutor application. Include your accounting background, the levels you can teach and your weekly availability. We reply with the next step.
